The first woodcut embodies a view of Cologne, which is probably a faithful reproduction of its appearance towards the end of the fifteenth century.

16467 SPECULUM EXEMPLORUM omnibus Christicolis salubriter inspiciendum, stout sm. folio, fine copy in the original leathercovered boards, £2. 10s

In civitate Argentina (Martin Flach), 1490

A curious and diverting book of Monkish stories, of which there must be over a thousand in number. Many of them are very crapulous, the crimes of the flesh being a favourite subject. The fly-leaves are from a lawbook in Low German, apparently the Lüneburg dialect, printed about 1475-80. 16468 CÆSARII CISTERCIESIS MONACHI IN HEYSTERBACHO Dyalogus Miraculorum, Editio Princeps, 309 leaves, double columns, with 35 lines to a full page, s. 1. et a.-[THOME CANTIPRATENSIS] LIBER qui dicitur Bonum universale de pprietatibus Apum.

quia de Prelatis et Subditis tractat, 134 leaves, the first blank, in double columns, with 39 lines to a full page, s. 1. et a.2 vols. in 1, folio, fine copies in the original oak boards covered with stamped leather, clasps, £5. 10s (Coloniæ, cir. 1474-76)

The first book in the volume is from the press of Ulrich Zell; the second (although referred by Brunet to a Strassburg press) seems to have been printed by J. Koelhoff of Lubeck, at Cologne, about 1475. The Dialogue of Miracles is a work of historical interest, and relates chiefly to the events of Cæsarius' own times. He flourished during the first half of the thirteenth century.

A fine and perfect copy like the above is a desideratum for a public library, and not often met with.

"Edition préférée aux autres, car les critiques de Pagi y sont inserées à leurs places; on y trouve des notes par Mansi et plus des Index en 3 vols. qui ne sont pas dans l'édition de Rome."-Brunet.

The annals of Baronius furnish the complete and connected account of Christian affairs during the first twelve centuries of the Church, and with the Supplements of Raynaldus and Spondanus, and the Chronological Apparatus of Pagi, and Mansi's Notes, bring the History of the Church down to the year 1640 in one continuous narrative, introducing documents from the Papal Archives which serve to elucidate profane history at the same time, and to which, in the earlier portion more particularly, Baronius had access both as Cardinal and intimate friend and confessor to Pope Clement VIII.

Nurembergo, A. Koberger, 1493

One of the most striking pictures of the kind usually designated the Dance of Death is found here on folio 264. Three grotesque figures are dancing violently, one is piping, and a fifth is gesticulating from the cerecloths on the ground.

The book appears in this section as being to a great extent a history of the Popes and the Church.

16480 [DIGBY (Kenelm H.)] Mores Catholici, or Ages of Faith, 11 books in 3 vols. roy. 8vo. hf. russia, £3. 3s 1845-47

The Middle Ages were according to this author " ages of vast and beneficent intelligence," and he has here certainly contrived to extract from mediæval literature an immense number of noble passages which, woven into his own enthusiastic text, form a book that few could read without delight. He has collected all the instances of generosity and devotion which marked the conduct of individuals in those days, and placed it to the account of the Church they belonged to.
