The first book in the volume is from the press of Ulrich Zell; the second (although referred by Brunet to a Strassburg press) seems to have been printed by J. Koelhoff of Lubeck, at Cologne, about 1475. The Dialogue of Miracles is a work of historical interest, and relates chiefly to the events of Cæsarius' own times. He flourished during the first half of the thirteenth century.

The annals of Baronius furnish the complete and connected account of Christian affairs during the first twelve centuries of the Church, and with the Supplements of Raynaldus and Spondanus, and the Chronological Apparatus of Pagi, and Mansi's Notes, bring the History of the Church down to the year 1640 in one continuous narrative, introducing documents from the Papal Archives which serve to elucidate profane history at the same time, and to which, in the earlier portion more particularly, Baronius had access both as Cardinal and intimate friend and confessor to Pope Clement VIII.

One of the most striking pictures of the kind usually designated the Dance of Death is found here on folio 264. Three grotesque figures are dancing violently, one is piping, and a fifth is gesticulating from the cerecloths on the ground.

The book appears in this section as being to a great extent a history of the Popes and the Church.

He has collected all the instances of generosity and devotion which marked the conduct of individuals in those days, and placed it to the account of the Church they belonged to.

It contains also valuable biographical sketches of the friars who studied the native languages, and accounts of the works they composed in this branch of philology. On p. 122 it is stated that the Escala of San Juan Climaco was the first book printed in Mexico, in 1535. The date is 1532 according to Gonzalez Davila.
