Trinity Brothers:

16687 ANDRADE (Alonso de) Vidas de S. Juan de Mata y S. Felix de Valois, fundadores de la Religion de la Trinidad, Redencion de Cautivos, sm. 4to. vellum, 10s

Madrid, 1668 The philanthropy of this order, founded early in the thirteenth century, serves like the learning of the Benedictines, to redeem the name of the monks from general condemnation.

Jesuits:

16688 ALEGAMBE (Philippi) Heroes et victimæ charitatis Societatis Jesu (1539-1647); extremum decennium (1648-57) adiecit Ioannes Nadassi, 4to. calf, £2. 10s

Romæ, 1658 16689 CABINET JESUITIQUE, contenant plusieurs pièces tres curieuses . . . avec un recueil des Mysteres de l'Eglise Romaine -Legende veritable de Jean Le Blanc-2 vols. in 1, 16mo. engraved and printed titles, with some curious plates, fine copy in red morocco extra, gilt edges, by Derome, from the Beckford library, £15. 15s Cologne, 1678

A rare and curious little volume, quite perfect and in the most desirable condition. It contains not only a prose summary of everything objectionable in the doctrine and practice of the Jesuits, but also a number of satirical pieces in verse, some of which are more than free, and are appropriately illustrated by the plates. The book is one of the Elzevirian annexes, and is believed to have been printed by Waesberghe at Amsterdam.

They succeeded in taking a bitter revenge against La Chalotais, who underwent imprisonment and ten years' persecution for having done his duty as a magistrate.

The "Nouvelles Lettres" give the continuation from 1767 to 1820, besides some previously unpublished matter of an earlier date.

It is easy to forgive the proselytizing spirit of the Catholic missionaries in view of this magnificent contribution to our knowledge of the history and geography of the globe. The Church may well be proud of the Lettres Edifiantes. 16707 LOCKMAN'S TRAVELS of the JESUITS into various parts of the World, 2 vols. 8vo. maps, calf, 10s 1762

Derived from the Lettres Edifiantes.

The work is simply invaluable for the history of the Church in England during the reigns of Elizabeth and James.

The first and still one of the most important books-if not the most important-upon Tonquin and Cochin-China, the Annamite Empire upon which the eyes of the West are now gazing with so much interest and curiosity.

16715 [ALEXANDRE DE RHODES] Divers Voyages de la Chine, et autres royaumes de l'Orient, 3 parts in 1 vol. sm. 4to. vellum, fine copy, 20s

Paris, 1684 The only complete edition of the Travels of this celebrated Missionary. Whatever glory attaches to the task of encountering danger and death for the purpose of converting heathen nations, belongs preeminently to the Church of Rome. English churchmen takes pride in the achievements of their Scripture Readers, but in disinterested self-sacrifice, and in plenitude of success, the Jesuit and other missionaries of Catholicity have never had rivals or equals.
