The Mishna is the oldest and most important body of the Hebrew traditions. The Talmud (of Babylon or of Jerusalem) is composed of the Mishna, with the supplementary Gemara (Jerusalem or Babylonian, as the case may be), a later collection of traditions.

The value of this work cannot be too highly estimated. The text is given in Hebrew and Latin, the commentaries of Bartenora and Maimonides as well as the notes of Guisius, Surenhusius, and others, being in Latin only. 17643 EIGHTEEN TREATISES from the Mishna, translated by De Sola and Raphall, 8vo. cloth, 188 1843

Philo and Paul were two Hellenized Jews of great ability and learning. The one joined the intellectual company of the Neo-platonists, the other flung himself into the new sect along with peasants and fishermen. The latter has become a saint, whose words are quoted throughout the world; the philosopher is only read by scholars and students. Philo sought to prove that the Pentateuch contained the essence of Greek philosophy, as well as the truth of Jewish history.
