[ocr errors]

1833

He proves the former universality of snake-worship, and identifies that divinity with the very individual Serpent who discoursed with Eve in Eden. The name of Abury is derived from two Hebrew words meaning the Python of the Sun,-from which we may infer that the Druids were familiar with the tongue of Moses.

1816

One of the most extraordinary works ever written. His theory that the population of the world split into three sections at the destruction of Babel, each carrying with them over the globe the traditions of the true religion, afterwards warped and transformed by time-does not invalidate the industry and learning which enabled him to gather innumerable facts of real importance. Buddhism was merely the corruption of the religion held by the Hebrew patriarchs after the Deluge, and the Brahman mythology of India was derived from Buddhism. This was one of Mr. Faber's less valuable facts.

1872 A fascinating work, in spite of its profuse erudition. As a contribution to the literature of Comparative Mythology its importance can hardly be overrated.

Paris, 1845 17698 HIGGINS (Godfrey) Anacalypsis, an attempt to draw aside the veil of the Saitic Isis, or an inquiry into the origin of languages, nations, and religions, 2 vols. 4to. plates, £14.

1836

Ninety-one pages of Index, in treble columns, with 79 lines to a column, constitute the great value of the Anacalypsis. Of the author's portentous knowledge, his powerful critical faculty, his fitness to investigate and elucidate the ancient mysteries of mythology, philology, ethnology, and other ologies, many persons speak with reverence and rapture. But even men of education must admit that Higgins collected a large number of curious and important facts.

17699 INMAN (Thomas) Ancient Faiths embodied in ancient names, 2 thick vols. 8vo. plates and woodcuts, cloth, £2. 10s

17700

1872-73

Nearly 2000 pages of a kind of lexicon of names and things, each article forming a long and curious disquisition upon the origin of Christian and other mythologies. A great deal of the Phallic element is found here.

17704

1786 A sweet theme for the display of knowledge and for indulgence in delightful speculation.

Discourse on the Worship of Priapus and its connexion with the mystic Theology of the Ancients (New Edition), to which is added an Essay on the Worship of the Generative Powers during the Middle Ages of Western Europe, sm. 4to. 40 plates, comprising 130 Phallic illustrations, £5.

Privately printed, 1865

The additional Essay which constitutes the larger part of the book, is said to have been composed by the late Thomas Wright and J. C. Hotten in collaboration. Their object was, of course, purely scientific, as one may readily pretend to imagine. 17705 LAJARD (FELIX) RECHERCHES SUR LE CULTE, LES SYMBOLES, LES ATTRIBUTS, ET LES MONUMENS FIGURÉS DE VENUS en Orient et en Occident, 1837-Introduction à l'étude du culte de Mithra, 1847-Recherches sur le Culte Public et les Mystères de Mithra en Orient et en Occident, 1867-the 3 parts in 1 vol. 4to. with a folio Atlas, containing 145 plates (35 and 110), uniformly bound in hf. morocco, £21. Paris, 1837-67

The above description does not quite agree with the first title-page to the Atlas, which gives 40 plates, that being the number of the "explications" following. The words "reste inédite," marked in pencil, account for the deficiencies. Brunet would appear not to have seen the book, as he describes the Mithra as a folio, and gives 48 plates to the Venus. The title-page mentions" un tableau lithographié," which is not in the volume, nor alluded to by Brunet. 17706 LIEBUSCH (Georg) Skythika, oder etymologische und kritische Bemerkungen über alte Bergreligion und späteren Fetischismus, 8vo. bds. 3s 6d. 2s 6d

New York, 1876 Valuable as a work on early Christian art, with figures of all the monuments described, and comprising many curious items of information in its text. The author's theories need not be taken into account, although he brings Agni, Mithra, and Horus to their support.

"The parallel of the Christian and Pagan ideas on certain points is, as might be expected, carefully pointed out, with very interesting results. One of the best chapters is the last, on 'Resurrection and Life Everlasting, as displayed in Ancient Art, Pagan and Christian.""-Athenæum, August 19th, 1876, p. 246.

17715 O'BRIEN (Henry) on the Round Towers of Ireland, or the Mysteries of Free-Masonry, of Sabaism, and of Budhism unveiled, WITH THE PREFACE, 8vo. cuts, cloth, £2.

1834

Many people are fascinated by studies that combine obscenity and learning. According to O'Brien, Buddha was Priapus, and the Round Towers were symbols of Irish Buddhistical virility.

The original papers are sober and not over-presumptuous essays; introduction, notes, and appendix contain some gems of Priapean sagacity.

17726

An extraordinary work which was everywhere suppressed and which led to its author's imprisonment. He devoted his profound learning to a base end, when he pretended to prove that the eating of the apple was a metaphorical way of describing the first act of union between Eve and Adam ;-for, as the illustrations from various sources and the digressions into kindred (and still more objectionable) subjects, prove, his true object can only have been a morbid indulgence in nastiness.
