"Written by Mr. Houston, for which he was fined £200 and two years' imprisonment.' Thus runs a note on the title-page, but Lowndes says that the author was a certain John Webbe. Whoever he was, the book is very clever and vigorous.

17747 FICINI (Marsilii) PLATONICA Theologia de immortalitate animarum, stout sm. folio, old calf, £3. 10s Florentie, Ant. Miscominus, 1482 EDITIO PRINCEPS: rare. It contains 318 ll. in all (instead of 316, as Brunet says).

Ficinus was certainly more a pagan than a Christian, although he also wrote a work on the Christian religion. The story runs that he appeared after his death to his friend and fellow-Platonist, Mercatus, to bear testimony to the truth of his arguments for the immortality of the soul.

About 1690-1700

From internal evidence, this is the work of a personal friend of Spinosa, whose name I have not been able to learn. Although it is in fluent French, there are errors which show the author was not a Frenchman, but a Dutchman.

The sacred book of the Mandæans, Mendæites, Nasaræans, or Disciples of John the Baptist, also called Sabians or Sabæans, is written in a language closely akin to Chaldee. The religion is of Gnostic origin, and anti-Christian (although based to some extent upon the Bible). Its followers were, however, formerly called Johannite Christians.

17766 CHWOLSOHN (Dr. D.) die Ssabier und der Ssabismus, 2 vols. thick 8vo. and Index, sewed, 20s St. Petersburg, 1856 An exhaustive and admirable work, which must remain the chief and standard source of information concerning everything that relates to the Sabians of Harrân (a survival of the ancient Græco-Syrian heathens, who have been wrongly identified with the Mendæite Sabians of Mesopotamia, and the Himyarite Sabæans of Arabia, although they have little in common beyond the name).
