1760 This learned work contains the first existing specimens in print of the Tibetan, Mendæan, Zend, and Mongol languages. The mass of curious information collected by Hyde concerning old Persia and the religion and traditions of the Magi (or Zoroastrians) can hardly be imagined without actual perusal. The unwearied industry and subtle intellect of Dr. Hyde placed him in regard to these studies a century before his time.

Cockburn Thomson, square small 8vo. original unabridged edition, pp. cxix and 155 (sells 10s 6d), cloth, 5s Hertford, 1855

The Bhagavad Gita, which was written probably some time before the birth of Christ, and was inserted in the great epic poem Mahabharata, is not only a poem, but also the greatest philosophical work which India has produced. It belongs to the Sankhya system-the most important of Hindu schools of philosophy-and is Pantheistic in its character.

The introduction by Mr. Thomson, which gives with admirable condensation an analysis of the doctrines of all the Hindu systems of Philosophy, has long been acknowledged to be a masterpiece.

Plate 59 is responsible for turning many weak heads. It represents Krishna nursed by Devaki in such a style that good Christians have rushed to the conclusion that Hinduism derives part of its mythology from the history of Christ, while the bold infidel points to this as one of the sources of Christian fable concerning the Virgin Mother and her Son.

1877

The only translation that will ever appear in a European language of the famous Bible of the Sikhs, the book which transformed the wild tribes of the Punjab into a formidable nation, resembling the Puritans of England in their stern and warlike fanaticism. The religion, founded towards the end of the fifteenth century, by the prophet and Reformer Nanak, was not a new and strange creation like Mormonism, but like the contemporary agitation in the European Church which produced Luther and the Reformation, it was a striving to recall the purity of faith and worship which were ascribed to the earliest stage of Brahmanism. Hence the books of the Granth afford valuable illustration for the study even of the Vedas and Puranas of quasi-Catholic India.
