Dedicated to Sir Edward Coke. This narrow-minded Puritan enunciated doctrines which the pious New Englanders put into practice at a later date under the guidance of the enlightened Mather family. WITCHES-continued.

Instruments used by Jugglers, some of the marginal notes slightly
cut into, calf, antique style, £15.
W. Brome, 1584

From the description given by Lowndes it might be supposed that the first edition did not contain everything that was published in later ones. The truth is that the first is in every way the best edition, and that all those which succeeded, whether in quarto or in folio, were merely publishers' reprints. Scot was an enlightened man who treated witchcraft rationally, to the great disgust of all truly pious Christians.

In this third edition there are certain additions, which, although extremely curious, are however quite incongruous with the character of the original work having been compiled by an adept in the Black Art, a person of totally different opinions and reasoning power from Scot.
