CATALOGUE of ANCIENT MANUSCRIPTS in the British Museum, part I: GREEK (by E. M. Thompson and O. F. Warner), royal folio. 20 large autotype facsimiles, bds. £1. 1881

"The Catalogue of Ancient Manuscripts in the British Museum is intended to give a detailed account, with facsimiles, of works in Greek and Latin contained in papyri and codices, generally of a date earlier than the close of the ninth century. The present division is arranged in two sections. In the first are comprised classical and other secular writers; in the second biblical, liturgical, and theological MSS. the unique character and wide interest of some entitle them to the minute description which has been attempted in the following pages. The classical section is incomparably rich in early remains of the Iliad, comprising the two papyri of Harris and Bankes and the palimpsest fragments from the Nitrian Desert. Of still greater critical value are the papyri containing the orations of Hyperides, of which all the extant remains are now collected within the walls of the Museum. Among the biblical MSS. the Codex Alexandrinus holds the first place, etc."-E. M. Thompson.

extra, gilt edges, from the library of the Count de Morante, by
Bozérian le jeune, £12. 128
Venetiis, N. Jenson, 1471

A book of great rarity. It is certainly the Editio Princeps of the latter portion of the volume, containing the treatise de ego, etc.; as for the rest of it, the priority cannot be with certainty attributed to Jenson's edition or to the one printed at Rome in the same year.

The SECOND EDITION of the "Vocabularium ex quo," printed in Gothic letters, without marks, having 35 lines to a full page. Contains 165 11.; ruled with red lines.

A book of singular importance as a preuve in the History of Printing; being in the same type as was used in the Catholicon of 1460, which is always assigned to Guttenberg. The first edition (in the same type) had appeared two years earlier; but of that only a single copy is now extant, which is in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Of this edition of 1469, apparently only two other copies are known-one in the Bibliothèque Nationale, the other in Lord Spencer's library.

Who were the Etruscans? Lord Crawford is one of the latest writers on the subject, and maintains in the above work, with a singular abundance of learning and argument, a somewhat similar theory to that of the late Dr. Donaldson. His treatment of the subject is however much more exhaustive than that of the former writer, and he attributes a distinctly Germanic character to the Etruscan language, for which Dr. Donaldson claimed a purely Scandinavian kinship. There are some philological arguments based upon the Inscriptions (especially those few which are bilingual) which will stagger many adherents to other theories, and carry conviction to minds already inclined to accept the Teutonic solution of this ancient riddle. Amongst the more remarkable instances of happy interpretation is the explanation of the names Mezentius and Turnus. The least that can be said of this volume is that it is a highly valuable contribution to the study of Old Italic Philology.
