joy and happiness for ever and ever!

At this awful moment, though the sun was shining, and it was quite light before, (being between twelve and three o'clock in the day-time,) it on a sudden became dark, quite dark; and there was a great earthquake, so that the soldiers and people who had been nailing Jesus to the cross were very much frightened, and did not know what to do, nor where to go. Their laughter was

turned into sorrow; they wrung their hands, and cried out in great alarm, "Truly, this man was the Son of God!" But, alas ! it was too late to undo what they had done. They had crucified their Lord and Saviour; they could not bring him back to life again he was dead, and his suf

ferings were over for ever.

LESSON X.

JESUS RISEN.

D. I suppose, Mamma, that the people who loved Jesus Christ were very sorry when they saw him nailed to the cross.

Mamma. They were indeed,

my dear. They hardly knew

how to bear the sight, or how to think of all the pain he had

passed through.

His poor mo

ther's heart was almost broken

with grief.

D. What became of her, Mamma, when Jesus was gone?

Mamma. She went home to live with John the disciple whom Jesus loved, and whom he had told to take care of her.

Among the rest of the good people, there was one man named Joseph, who had loved Jesus very much. He was a rich man, and had a large garden; and there

was a new tomb in his garden, hewn out of a rock. A tomb means a place to bury people in.

When this good man heard that Jesus was dead, he went to the judge, and begged leave to take his body down from the cross, that he might bury it in his own new tomb.

D. Did the judge give him leave, Mamma?

Mamma. Yes, Joseph, therefore, took it down, and wrapped
