ADAM AND EVE.

Little Daniel. MAMMA, will you tell me who was the first man that ever lived in the world?

Mamma.

Adam was the first

man, and Eve was the first wo

man.

D. Where did they live, Mamma?

Mamma. They lived in a large garden which God made on purpose for them. This garden was full of fine shrubs

and sweet

flowers; and
and there were two
trees in the middle of it, called
the Tree of Life and the Tree of
Knowledge. A river ran through
the garden, to water the trees and
flowers that grew there.

D. Did Adam and Eve live all their lives in the garden, Mamma? Mamma. No, my dear: God turned them out of this lovely garden because they did what He told them not to do. When He first put them to live there, He told them that they might eat the fruit of any tree that grew in the garden except the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, which grew in the middle; but that they were not to touch.

D. I should think there was

plenty for them without it, Mam

ma, as there were so many trees

there.

Mamma.

Yes there would

have been plenty for them, but they became naughty, and did not mind what God said: so they went one day, when they thought no one saw them, and picked some of the fruit, and ate it. Then they tried to hide themselves among the thick trees, for they knew they had done wrong, and were afraid lest God should
