FROM THE HEING OF

GEORGE C. DEMPSEY

Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1842, by G. BIGELOW, AND A. B. GROSH,

In the Clerk's Office of the Northern District of New York.

CURE FOR DRINKING SPIRITUOUS LIQUORS. Take two ounces of the flour of consideration. Dissolve it in a pint of the spirit of self-denial; then add one quart of the juice of resolution to it, shake it well together, and put it into the golden bowl-if the golden bowl (memory) be not broken; then sweeten it with the sugar of high reputation. A dram of these bitters may be taken as often as the appetite craves strong drink. A larger portion of juice may be added, if necessary; and if one bowl-full should not perfect a cure, it must be filled up again with the same kind. The longer one takes these bitters, the less bitter will they taste.

N. B. Copious draughts of sweet milk, it is said, will quench the burning thirst which oft assails the reformed inebriate.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

The first edition of 5000 copies having been so favorably received, we are encouraged to prepare a second. We have carefully revised the work, corrected errors which inexperience and haste had caused, and adapted it to present circumstances. We have added a large number of new pieces, and omitted some of the old ones, and have prefixed the names of tunes wherever deemed necessary. The same care has been taken to exclude phrases and sentiments which all Christians could not conscientiously sing, and to insert such only as every one believes, and as have strict reference to temperance. Our aim has been to make a book, every song of which may be used by Washingtonians without a violation of their principles and constitutions, both of which absolutely forbid the introduction of sectarianism, party politics, denunciation or harshness. May God grant success to every effort to advance this great and glorious Reform. A. B. G.

Utica, November, 1842.

N. B. Directions to use this Edition in connection with the First.-The number of the Hymn or Song (not of the page) in the first edition, is, in this edition, placed in brackets [], in addition to the number by which it is designated in this book, whenever the number is different. If a cypher is enclosed in brackets, the Hymn or Song is not in the first edition.
