HE fhall reconcile Quarrels and Enmities among them, and not content himself with putting an end to them, but likewise endeavour to make a Reconciliation truly Christian.

X.

In fine, he fhall do them Juftice in all things, not favouring one in prejudice of the other, but having refpect First to Virtue, Secondly to natural Talents, to Merit, to Service, and to their Seniority in the Troop.

XI.

HE fhall take care that in his Ab fence, the Lieutenant, the Enfign, the Exempts, and the Brigadiers, practife thefe Maxims and thefe Regulations with Exactness.

HE fhall endeavour to have fome trusty Person in the Troop to obferve

and advertise him faithfully if the Subaltern Officers acquit themselves of their Duty.

RULES for a Regiment of Foot:

I.

HE Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, or other Officer who commands the Regiment in their Abfence, aught not to make ufe of the Command he has over the Regiment, to draw any Advantages from the Places through which they pafs on a Rout, under pretence of the Right of a Commander, or for any other Confideration whatfoever; nor to quarter in any other Places but what are mark'd out and determin'd by the King's Order; and aught ftrictly to fee that the Soldiers of the Regiment do not go out of the way on their Rout to pillage the adjacent Places.

II.

LET him chastise, in an Exemplary manner, all those who have thus gone out of the way during the March, and those who have exacted any thing of their Landlords but what is determin'd for them by the King's Order, and let him put into the Hands of the Intendant of Juftice for the Province those who are found convicted of having robb'd and pillag'd, that he may cause Juftice to be done for it.

III.

LET him never fuffer any Women to be with the Regiment, under pretence of being Sutlers, or Washers, or Servants; and let him cashier the SerJeant, Corporal, or Soldier, who would not part with or turn them off, when they have been duly advertis'd of it by their Officers.

LET him inform himself exactly, as foon as he comes to the place where

the Regiment is quarter'd, if there are any Quarrels among the Subaltern Officers, and let him immediately reconcile them, declaring from the Governour of the Province to those who fall again into these Faults, that he shall be oblig❜d to inform him of them, and that he will infallibly break them if they do not alter their Conduct. Let him reconcile those which are among the Soldiers of the Regiment, and let him punish, with all the Severity requir'd by the King's Orders, those who have fought with one another.

LET him not make any Agreement for the Regiment in one or more Places where he is in Garrifon. Let him exact nothing beyond what is imply'd in the King's Order, neither let him fuffer any of the other Officers to do it for his Company in particular, on pain of making Reftitution himself of what fhall have been taken or exacted, in cafe he does not advertise the Governour of the Province of it.

LET him take care that the Officers follow the King's Regulations for the Duty and the Refidence of the Captains, as they fhall be prefcrib'd by the Orders which are sent to the Regiment for that End. And that the Soldiers may not commit any Violence at their Landlords, and do not misuse them either by beating them, or hindring them from Attending their Work or their Business. Every one of the Captains are order'd to leave at least one Subaltern Officer in each Company to answer in his own Name for the Disorders which are done in it, and by Deduction and Retrenchment of his Allowance for Winter Quarters, if he has not taken care of it as foon as the Disorder happen'd.

LET the fame Commander give order that no Soldier go out of his Quarters without leave from his Officer, which may easily be done, whether the Reigment is Quarter'd in one place or
