IN thofe Places where the Nomination of a Rector belongs to me, to be careful always to put in the most Worthy, without Acceptation of Perfons, or Confideration of any Request, Looking on my self, in this Right, as charg'd with the Salvation of all the Souls in that Parish, for which I am to answer to GOD, on the good or ill beftowing of the Benefice. But if it does not depend on me, I must write to the Bifhop or to the Parron, to defire him in general to provide it with a good Paftor.

TQ endeavour gently to engage the Paftors, before or after their Induction, to pafs fome time in the Seminaries,

NOT to content my felf with giving good Orders, but to be careful of having them Executed, and apply my felf Seriously to it.

TO have inftructions drawn up of the Duties of the Officers in my Lands, giving each of them a Copy; and fending Perfons from time to time to know their Behaviour.

TO inform my felf exactly if there is any thing belonging to the Church ufurp'd by my Predeceffors of which I am in poffeffion; and in cafe it be so, to make Reftitution of the Fund, and all the Arrears which have been unduly poffeft.

For the Council during my Absence.

S Iknow they examine all Affairs in a Spirit of true Judges, I have nothing to recommend to them thereupon, but fhall only obferve to them in particular that which follows.

I.

TO take care always to judge on affairs by the right of the thing, and not by my Intereft or Authority.

II.

ALWAYS readily to accept any good Overtures of Accommodation; and in doubtful Cafes to incline rather to others than to me, especially when they are poor People.

SEVERELY to Chaftife any E

vil Proceedings of the Officers of my Lands.

IV.

TO grant reafonable Abatement to ruin'd Tenants, upon due Examination of their Caufe.

V.

TO be extreamly Shy in granting Interventions, and in permitting the Farmers to make ufe of the Committimus against Perfons at a distance, or in Affairs of little confequence.

VI.

ZEALOUSLY to take the part and the Caufe in hand of the Oppreft,

VII.

ABOVE all things to avoid enterprizing on the Rights of the Church, and readily to favour them when they are clear, or even if they are but doubtful.

VIII.

NOT to take advantage of Prefcriptions against any one and efpecially against the Church, when the Right is well grounded and Evident.

IX.

CAREFULLY to Examine those who present themfelves for Offices, their Probity, Life, and Manners, and their Capacity, not only by a bare Information, but likewife by affured Teftimonies; and in cafe of Competitors, to give always the Preference to Merit without regard to Recommendations.
