Inftructions for the Stewards and Officers of my Lands.

S I have refolv'd to give all the Offices of Judicature in my Lands gratis, I defire my Officers to Exercise them with fo great Exactness that there may be nothing to censure either in their Conduct or in their Manners; and they ought to look on themselves not only as Officers Eftablifh'd to adminifter Juftice impartially without

without acception of Perfons, but likewife as Men chofen and appointed to watch that nothing pafs in my Lands which is contrary to the Glory of God or to good Manners. Let them in fine be perfwaded that I charge their Confciences with all the Duties which are affix'd to the Quality of a Superior Lord of a Land.

I ordain them as Officers of Juftice carefully to obferve the Ordinances for fanctifying Sundays and Holy-days.

II.

NOT to fuffer any Dancing or Publick Gaming, or going into Taverns during Divine Service.

III.

TO obferve also with great Care the Ordinances which are made for the Abridgment of Law-Suits,

TO keep actual Refidence in the Places where they are oblig'd to render Juftice, and never to fail being there on the ufual Days.

V.

TO inform themselves diligently of Crimes and Defaults, both in the Accufation and Defence.

VI.

TO difpatch fuccinctly Criminal Caufes, preferably to other Business.

VII.

TO be likewife very Diligent in making good and faithful Inventories of the Poffeffions of Minors, and to provide them with Trustees and Guardians who are manifeftly Responsible; and Perfons of known Probity.

VIII.

To be always inclin'd to protect the Poor and the Weak, against the Rich and the Powerful

NOT to have any Enmities, and to take Pains to reconcile those who have contracted any gainft one another.

XII.

TO be exceeding careful that the Farmers and Perfons employ'd in my Affairs enterprise nothing to the prejudice of the Church; and if they difcover any Ufurpation which had formerly been made on Ecclefiaftical Rights or Poffeffions, immediately to inform me of it, without conniving at or putting it off from one to another.

NEVER to give Sentence in my Fa vour in doubtful Cafes, without firft making known to me or my Council the Reasons of their Doubt, and to clear very plainly the Justice of those Affairs which are under my Name.

TO take care to examine and fearch into the Caufes of the Abatements which fhall be at any time ask'd by the Farmers and Under-Farmers of my Lands, to inform my Council of them.

XIII.

TO give Information to my faid Council of the Reparations which are necessary to prevent Houses from falling to ruine.

XIV.

NOT to fuffer my Name to be made ufe of tò prejudice any Perfon.
