The MASQUERADES having been revived this Winter, contrary to the Wishes and Expectation of all Sober Men, the following Satire was publish'd against those Nocturnal and Dangerous Entertainments.

The MASQUERADE.

ELL! we have reach'd the Precipice at laft!

W The prefent Age of Vice obfcures the paft.

Our dull Fore-fathers were content to stay,
Nor fin'd till Nature pointed out the Way.
No Arts they practis'd to forestal Delight,
But ftop'd to wait the Calls of Appetite.
Their Top-Debauches were, at beft, precife,
An unimprov'd Simplicity of Vice.

But this bleft Age has found a fairer Road,
And left the Paths their Ancestors had trod.
Nay, we would wear (our Tafte fo very nice is)
Their old caft fafhions fooner than their Vices.
Whoring, till now, a common Trade has been;
But Mafquerades refine upon the Sin;
An higher Tafte to wickedness impart,
And fecond Nature with the Helps of Art;
New Ways and Means to Pleasure we devife
For Pleafure looks the lovelier in Disguise:

* Satire against Masquerades.

The

The Stealth and Frolick give a fmarter Guft,
Add Wit to Vice, and Elegance to Luft.
In vain, the Modifh Evil to redress,
At once confpire the Pulpit and the Prefs;
Our Priests and Poets preach and write in vain ;
It ftands all Satire, Sacred and Profane.
So many various Humours to impart
Would exercife and tire a Proteus' Art;
Where, loft in one promifcuous Whim, we fee
Sex, Age, Condition, Quality, Degree,
Where the facetious Crowd, at once, lay down,
And take up every Perfon but their own.
Fools, Dukes, Rakes, Cardinals, Fops, Indian Queens,
Belles in Tye Wigs, and Lords in Harlequins ;
Troops of Right Honourable Porters come,
And Garter'd Small-Coal Merchants crowd the Room;
Valets ftuck o'er with Coronets appear,

Lacquies of State, and Footmen with a Star,

Sailors of Quality with Judges mix,

And Chimney Sweepers drive their Coach and Six
Statefmen, fo us'd at Court the Mafk to wear,

Now condefcend again to use it here;

Ideots turn Conjurers, and Courtiers Clowns,
And Sultans drop their Hindkerchiefs to Nuns;
Officious H-d- gg- r deceives our Eyes,
For his own Perfon is his beft Difguife;
Half the Town Toafts, as fearing no Difgrace,
Truft to the Natural Vizor of their Face:
Starch'd Quakers glare in Furbeloes and Silk,
Beaux deal in Sprits, and Dutcheffes cry Milk.
But guard thy Fancy, Mufe, nor ftain thy Pen
With the leud Joys of this fantaftick Scene!
Where Sexes blend in One confus'd Intrigue !
Where the Girls ravifh! And the Men grow big!
Nor Credit what the idle World has faid,

Of Lawyers forc'd! And Judges brought to Bed!
Or that to Belles their Brothers breathe their Vows
Or Husbands thro' Miftake gallant a Spouse!
Such dire Misfortunes, and a num'rous Throng
Of like Enormities require the Song;
But the chaft Mufe, with Blushes cover'd o'er,
Retires confus'd. and will reveal no more.
