O deal with Prior Park and the Allen family without referring to WIDCOMBE HOUSE and the Chapman and Bennet families, would be difficult. At the same time, having in Historic Houses in Bath, and Bath, Old and New, entered largely into the subject, we content ourselves

with giving a clear and tolerably full table of genealogy, which, with a few brief notes, will afford all the information likely to be of interest; it will, moreover, show the connection between the Bennet and the Allen families. Philip Bennet was the best known Bath, having represented the 1741 to 1747. The youngest sister of this gentleman became the second wife of Philip Allen, who died in the same year as her husband, 1767.

At about this time the family of Bennet, Earls of Arlington and of Tankerville, said by Morant to have descended from the Wiltshire stock, may probably have taken their descent. William Bennet of Newbury, father of Henry Bennet of Newbury (will proved London, Jan. 10th, 1485), may well have been son or brother of John, buried at Norton in 1467. It may be remembered that Norton and Newbury are scarcely forty miles apart. And from the Newbury stock the London Branch undoubtedly comes.
