HYMN 47, C. M.

Sovereignty and Dominion of God.
EEP silence, all created things!
And wait your Maker's nod;

KEE

My soul stands trembling, while she sings
The honors of her God.

2 Life, death, and hell, and worlds unknown,
Hang on his firm decree;

He sits on no precarious throne,

Nor borrows leave to be.

3 Chained to his throne, a volume lies,
With all the fates of men,
With every angel's form and size,
Drawn by th' eternal pen.

4 His providence unfolds his book,
And makes his counsels shine;
Each opening leaf, and every stroke,
Fulfills some deep design.

5 My God! I would not long to see
My fate, with curious eyes,-
What gloomy lines are writ for me,
Or what bright scenes may rise.
6 In thy fair book of life and grace,
Oh! may I find my name,

Recorded in some humble place,
Beneath my Lord, the Lamb.

HYMN 48, H. M.

Faithfulness of God.

mf 1 THE promises I sing,

Which sovereign love hath spoke;

Nor will th' eternal King

His words of grace revoke :

They stand secure

And steadfast still;

Not Zion's hill

Abides so surė.

2 The mountains melt away,

When once the Judge appears;

And sun and moon decay,

That measure mortal years;

f

49

But still the same,
In radiant lines,
The promise shines
Through all the flame.

3 Their harmony shall sound
Through my attentive ears,
When thunders cleave the ground,
And dissipate the spheres;

Mid all the shock

Of that dread scene,

[ocr errors]

I stand serene,-
Thy word, my rock.

HYMN 49, C. M.

The Glories of Redemption.

ATHER! how wide thy glory shines!
How high thy wonders rise!

Known through the earth by thousand signs,-
By thousand through the skies.

2 Those mighty orbs proclaim thy power,
Their motions speak thy skill;

And, on the wings of every hour,
We read thy patience still.

3 But, when we view thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,

Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms,-

4 Here the whole Deity is known;
Nor dares a creature guess,-
Which of the glories brightest shone,
The justice, or the grace.

5 Now the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains;

Bright seraphs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

6 Oh! may I bear some humble part,
In that immortal song;

1

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

THE

HYMN 50, S. M.

The God of Mercy and Justice.

HE Lord on high proclaims
His Godhead from his throne;

"Mercy and justice are the names,
By which I will be known.

2 "Ye dying souls, that sit

In darkness and distress!
Look from the borders of the pit,
To my recovering grace."

3 Sinners shall hear the sound;

Their thankful tongues shall own,-
Our righteousness and strength are found
In thee, the Lord, alone.

4 In thee shall Israel trust,

1

And see their guilt forgiven;

God will pronounce the sinners just,
And take the saints to heaven.

HYMN 51, C. M.

Almighty Power and Majesty of God.

THE

'HE Lord, our God, is full of might,
The winds obey his will;

He speaks, and, in his heavenly height,
The rolling sun stands still.

2 Rebel, ye waves! and o'er the land
With threatening aspect roar;

The Lord uplifts his awful hand,
And chains you to the shore.

3 Howl, winds of night! your force combine;
Without his high behest,

Ye shall not, in the mountain pine,
Disturb the sparrow's nest.

4. His voice sublime is heard afar,
In distant peals it dies

He yokes the whirlwind to his car,
And sweeps the howling skies.

5 Ye nations! bend-in reverence bend;
Ye monarchs! wait his nod,

1

And bid the choral song ascend
To celebrate your God.

HOW

HYMN 52, C. M.

God, holy, just, and sovereign.

OW should the sons of Adam's race
Be pure before their God?

mp

If he contend in righteousness,
We fall beneath his rod.

mf 2 Strong is his arm, his heart is wise;
What vain presumers dare,
Against their Maker's hand to rise,
Or tempt th' unequal war?

3 Mountains, by his almighty wrath,
From their old seats are torn;

He shakes the earth, from south to north,
And all her pillars mourn.

4 He bids the sun forbear to rise-

Th' obedient sun forbears

His hand with sackcloth spreads the skies,
And seals up all the stars.

5 He walks upon the stormy sea,

1

Flies on the stormy wind:

There's none can trace his wondrous way,
Or his dark footsteps find.

GO!

HYMN 53, C. M.

The divine Purpose and Providence.
OD moves in a mysterious way,
U His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up his bright designs,
And works his sovereign will.

3 Ye fearful saints! fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a smiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,

And scan his work in vain
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

HYMN 54, C. M.
Love of God.

a;

mf 1 COME, ye that know and fear the Lord!

And raise your soul above;

Let every heart and voice accord,
To sing that--God is love.

2 This precious truth his word declares,
And all his mercies prove;

While Christ, th' atoning Lamb, appears,
To show that--God is love.

3 Behold his loving-kindness waits,
For those who from him rove,
And calls of mercy reach their hearts,
To teach them-God is love.

4 The work begun is carried on,

By power from heaven above;
And every step, from first to last,
Proclaims that God is love.

5 Oh! may we all, while here below,
This best of blessings prove;

Till warmer hearts, in brighter worlds,
Shall shout that God is love.

HYMN 55, C. M.

The Sovereignty of God.

THY way;

1 THY way, O God! is in the sea;
Thy paths I cannot trace,

Nor comprehend the mystery

Of thine unbounded grace.

2 Here, the dark veils of flesh and sense
My captive soul surround;
Mysterious deeps of providence
My inward thoughts confound.

3 As, through a glass, I dimly see
The wonders of thy love,

How little do I know of thee,
Or of the joys above!
