TAIT'S EDINBURGH MAGAZINE.

"❝TAIT ' preserves its freshness wonderfully, blending instruction and amusement in a masterly manner.” -Sun.

"The gay and the serious will find in its rages reading suitable to each taste."-Civil Service Gazette. "A very carefully, tastefully, and sensibly managed magazine.”—Bell's Life in London.

"A very judicious mixture of light and solid reading."-Atlas.

"Particularly interesting."-British Banner.

The Dispatch, in reference to its sanitary advocacy, calls it "seasonable and well-timed."

"Altogether the magazine is about as good a shilling's worth as is often to be met with."-Press (London.) "This periodical will be found well worth the sober, middle-class price charged, which brings it from mere club and library use within ordinary domestic reach."-Edinburgh Weekly Herald.

This magazine is cheaper (the excellence of the original matter, and quantity of close letter-press considered) than any of the penny serials or papers."-Brighton Examiner.

"TAIT is marked by its usual intermingling of pleasing literature."-Bristol Mercury.

"The variety of subjects of which it treats, and the able manner in which they are discussed, render it deservedly one of the most popular and successful publications of the day."-Portsmouth Guardian.

"This old-established and favourite magazine, we doubt not, under its present management, will continue to maintain that high position among our serial literature which it has long enjoyed, and which it has deservedly won for itself."-Derbyshire Times.

"To rectify, to improve, to elevate public taste, is an object worthy the devotion of our best magazine writers, and in none of our shilling serials has this work been more effectually performed than in the pages of "TAIT.""-Welshman.

"There is not a page in the whole number that has not its own peculiar interest, awakening the sympathy or informing the mind of the reader."-Bradford Observer.

"Tait's Edinburgh Magazine' sustains its high character in nearly every form of literary excellence.”— Londonderry Standard.

THINKERS.

"There is really, in this book, a very considerable amount of reading and thought, put before the reader most quaintly and pleasantly. We learn from it almost without perceiving; and we can unhesitatingly say that, in our opinion, much more profit is to be derived from this volume than from many of far greater pretension." The Critic.

"Mr. Hood has long been known as a popular lecturer and anthor. The present volume will serve to increase his usefulness and fame. It consists of twelve valuable and interesting chapters on the following topics ⚫ We cannot but desire for this book a wide circulation."-Halifax Courier. 100 Copies or more of the Cheap Edition can be had at 18. each, direct from the Publishers.

BLIND AMOS & HIS VELVET PRINCIPLES:

OR, PROVERBS AND PARABLES FOR THE YOUNG FOLK.

"A charming little book. It is written somewhat after the manner of Old Humphrey,' conveying excellent instraction in the most pleasing style of anecdote and allegory."-Patriot.

"Very good, indeed. Original, striking, and pleasant. Not a little prose-poetry is to be found here-and even more solid thought, clearly and suggestively communicated. The greater part of the little book will stick when the young reader's immediate pleasure from its perusal has past away. 'Blind Amos' is an acquaintance not likely to be forgotten by those once introduced to him."-Nonconformist.

MR.

(54)

TR. JEFFREYS' RESPIRATOR, with all the Recent Improvements by him. The Wholesale Agent to the Manufacturers of Mr. JEFFREYS' RESPIRATORS invites attention to the following truths: 1. No prudent person could, on reflection (even as a matter of economy), trust vital organs, on the safety of which life depends, to any but the most perfect instrument producible by art. 2. Numerous and delicate combinations of metal of the quickest conducting powers are essential for constituting a real Respirator - a name itself introduced by Mr. Jeffreys, whose inquiries in physiological and experimental science are well known.-3. Any other form of matter can only keep out cold by most injuriously retarding the entry of fresh vital air in breathing, and thereby undermining the health. 4. The name Respirator" owes its very celebrity to that perfect construction which has annually brought relief and improved health to thousands of sufferers from the various ailments of the chest and throat. When watchfully employed as a preventive to attacks by the susceptible, it is especially valuable. Preventive Respirators for the Mouth, Dwarf, 9s.; Hand, 10s. to 16s.: for the Nose, the Nasal, 16s. Curative Respirators-Nasal, Ordinary Oral, 12s.; Expansible Oral, 21s. For Mouth and Nostrils, Orinasal, 14s. to 24s. Procurable of the Agents throughout London and the Kingdom.
