every time they came near him.

Sophy was

very unhappy indeed about this, and begged her mamma to send for a doctor to see the dog but her mamma only said, 'Nonsense, my dear child! The dog will soon get well again.'

Sophy's nurse said that she knew something about dogs' illnesses, so Sophy showed the dog to her, and when she saw it, she shook her head and said that she was afraid the little dog was very ill. Sophy asked if he would not get well again, but nurse said she was not quite sure about that, yet; she would be able to see better the next day.

Poor Sophy was very unhappy all that day, and she would not go away from her dog, at all. The next day Ruffles seemed worse. When she lifted up his little head and spoke to him, he shut his eyes and dropped back again.

The poor little dog did not get well again; he died in a few days. This was a very great grief to Sophy, for she really loved her little dog.

He was buried in a corner of Sophy's own little garden, and she planted some primroses over his grave. Her papa gave her another dog soon afterwards, but I do not think that she ever loved any other as much as her pet Ruffles.
