Thy presence, gracious God, afford
Though the heart that sorrow chideth
"Tis sweet to rest in lively hope
Thou art, O God, the life and light
The sins of youth and age
Tremble ye families profane

There is a grassy bed

Thus Lord, throughout my life would I

Times without number have I prayed
The Christians of old united in one
The Lord my Shepherd is

The Heathen perish day by day

The crowd, the poor unthinking crowd
The rain descends, the tempests rise
This sacred spot, O Lord, to thee
Thy glory, Lord, the heavens declare
"Tis my happiness below

Uncertain how the way to find

Vital spark of heavenly flame

When I survey the wond'rous cross
When Joseph his brethren beheld
What various hindrances we meet
"Why should I be affrighted, &c.
When languor and disease invade
Whither goest thou, Pilgrim stranger
With joy let each afflicted saint
While thee I seek protecting Power
When thou my righteous Judge, &c.

Whither should our full souls aspire

188

When weeping Mary came to seek
When toss'd on error's stormy tide

192

194

When pulse beats low and cheeks grow pale

195

What poor despised company
While on the verge of life I stand
Why shrinks my weak nature, &c.
What sound is this salutes mine ear
While shepherds in Jewry, &c.
When man was first created, &c.
With pleasure behold the city of gold
When for eternal worlds we steer
When Israel out of Egypt came

When through the torn sail the wild tempest 201

When gathering clouds around I view
When on the cross my. Lord I see

[ocr errors]

When swelling Jordan o'er us rolls
What wondrous love is this O, my soul!
When souls are first converted

.

When by sin overwhelm'd, shame covers

When in dark and dreadful gloom

When on the margin of the grave

Who is as the Christian great

Who is the weak Believer who

Worthy, O Lord, art thou
When shall we all meet again
What are those in bright array
When I set out for glory

Yonder-amazing sight! I see

Young people all, attention give

Ye happy souls whose peaceful minds

Ye sons of war I pray draw near

Ye soldiers of Jesus pray stand to, &c.

Ye weary, heavy laden souls

Ye jewels of my Master

Yonder! see the Lord descending

Ye virgin souls arise

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim
Ye heavens rejoice in Jesus' grace
