PREFACE

THIS work is intended to form a systematic course of instruction in the very extensive field of testing connected with pure Electrical Engineering. While much has been written, from time to time, about the more elementary branch of testing in Electrical Physics, relating in a measure to Electrical Engineering, I believe that, so far, no extensive attempt has been made to treat the more advanced and practical portions of the subject in that systematic manner which it requires.

I therefore venture to think that the present work, which not only embodies practically all the experimental work that it is usually possible to do at most colleges, but also many tests on heavier electrical machinery, together with a highly descriptive course on jointing Electric Light cables, should be eminently suitable for constituting the electrical laboratory practice in the second and third years of a complete course of instruction in Electrical Engineering, and in addition should be of considerable service to the electrical engineer in electrical works and central stations. As far as possible the tests have been arranged in the order in which they may be worked, when used as a course for students, but there are exceptions to this rule, owing to the advisability of keeping tests of a similar nature together. I have endeavoured to make the tests as complete and descriptive as possible, and applicable in the case of any college and testing room. Each test comprises an Introduction giving the chief features, advantages, and disadvantages of the test, condensed as much as possible; the Apparatus necessary; the Observations to be carried out, in other words, a complete and carefully arranged digest of the method of carrying out the actual test, with a Diagram of Apparatus and connections represented symbolically; a Tabular Form indicating the most convenient and proper way of recording the observations; and finally, Inferences which can be drawn from the results of the test.
