easily found. A philosophical system of classification for a library supposes that one mind can follow in the track of another, and can take time to reflect and discover what that track is; hence the difficulty of finding a book sought for in what is called a catalogue raisonné. There are very many books of which the appropriate place has never been fixed in any system of classification. Where, for example, shall works on suicide be placed, or what must be the classifier's creed to authorize him to decide what books must come into the class of orthodox and canonical, and what into that of heretical and schismatic? In view of these and other difficulties, the only unobjectionable plan for the second part of the Astor Library printed Catalogue seemed to be that of a simple dictionary of subjects, and it certainly is the one which renders the library most easy of consultation. Readers who wish for something more can have recourse to the classed catalogues in manuscript, or the fuller and more minute Bibliographies in that department of the Library. The Alphabetical Catalogue will probably require eight volumes of the size of the present, four for each part; the remaining three of the first part will be brought out as speedily as can be done, consistent with the labour requisite to secure to them tolerable correctness, and the revisional part of this labour cannot be divided; it can be performed only by the mind and eye of one person.
