Warner. 2d ed. 2 vols. roy. 8vo, $5. Boston, 1846 The distinguishing characteristic of this work is, that it is a theory of musical composition conformable to the present state of the art: a view of the rules and methods practised by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Spohr: it is unique for the copiousness as well as appositeness of its musical illustrations. The treatise of Albrechtsberger is full of antiquated pedantry, and that of Cherubini wholly unworthy of his illustrious name. In Germany, Weber's work is the standard authority. The works of Reicha and Marx possess some peculiar merits, but they aim more at particular excellencies, while Weber aims at general and universal ones. WARNER. Rudimental Lessons in Music.
