words are necessary in explanation of t
cause which has produced its appearanc
It is presumed that no one can have pe
rused these inimitable pieces of Biogra
phy' as they are justly termed in the Quar
terly Review, without being glad that they
are given to the public in a cheap and po-
pular form.

After the high eulogium which has been
cited, it would be almost presumptuous to
say any thing in recommendation of this
work. The motives with which the Lives
were written, together with the beautiful
simplicity which distinguishes them are
sufficient to justify the great popularity
they have attained, even if the individuals

themselves had been as insignificant as they
were celebrated.
possesses other merits. It tends to illus-
trate the character of its author, which is
almost as much developed as that of the
person of whom he speaks; and the mind
must be formed of the most unenviable
elements which can refrain from reverenc-
ing the goodness of heart, unaffected piety,
and tranquillity of soul, which it proves
him to have possessed. That Walton obey-
ed the divine precept of living in charity
with all men," is established beyond all
controversy by each of his works, and more
especially by the present.

But the value of the Lives has fortunately been described in a manner wor
