168 BLACK'S ESCA: For his country's sake, or Esca: a British Prince at the Court of Trajan, by Miss L. M. P. BLACK, 1 vol. post 8vo. numerous illustrations, cloth

1897

"A first rate book for boys. The pictures of British, and more particularly of Roman life, manners and customs in the time of Trajan are clearly and picturesquely brought before the reader. It is no easy matter to lose one's identity in that of a people who lived in days long past, but Miss Black has performed her task very creditably, giving us some interesting and life-like character studies.

"The trials and humiliations of the brave British Prince Esca are told with a spirit and energy which makes the hero worthy of the country he defended and suffered for."-N. Q.

New York, 1898 18 18 0

Messrs. G. P. Putnam's Sons announce the preparation and early publication of a critical Text and Translation of the Poem of Cid, the national Epic of Spain, in three volumes. This most ancient monument of Castilian Poetry is dated in the era 1245 (A.D. 1207 ?) and is a spirited description of the national hero, Rodrick or Ruy Diaz, Mio Cid semper vocatus, the only popular Spanish heroic character whose reputation may be said to have been European. It describes his life from the moment of his exile from Castile by Alfonso VI. to his capture of Valencia, and his subsequent rule over that city until his death, especially describing the marriage of the Cid's daughters, the treachery of their husbands the Counts of Carrion, and the punishment of the latter in single combat. This poem, which corresponds to the Chansons de Geste of France, is unquestionably the finest creation of the sort south of the Pyrenees, and superior in vitality and originality to nearly every production of its kind of the Middle Ages.

In the second volume, devoted to the Notes and Variants, there will be a careful presentation, line by line, of the peculiar readings and abbreviations of the manuscript,
