THE CYCLOPEDIA OF INDIA, AND OF EASTERN AND SOUTHERN SOUTHERN ASIA, Commercial, Industrial, and Scientific PRODUCTS OF THE MINERAL, VEGETABLE, AND ANIMAL KINGDOMS, USEFUL ARTS AND MANUFACTURES. BY SURGEON-GENERAL EDWARD BALFOUR. THIRD EDITION. The FIRST Edition and its two Supplements were published in India in the years, respectively, 1858 and 1862, and the SECOND Edition was also published in India, in 1873. The THIRD Edition, published in London in 1885, contains 35,000 Articles, with 16,000 Index headings. THIS HIS work brings together, up to date, and makes available for ready reference, the widely dispersed and invaluable information, whether Commercial, Industrial, or Scientific, which exists relating to India, Further India, and the East Indies generally. The Geographical Review, in noticing the Second Edition, said :— There has, indeed, hitherto been no way of learning anything of India, except by accumulating a large library. It is not too much to say that Dr. Balfour has now supplied this want." Journal of the National Indian Association, London, August, 1885.-" Three goodly sized handsome volumes having an aggregate of 3610 double columned pages, 35,000 articles, and 16,000 index headings. There is scarcely a subject relating to India and Eastern and Southern Asia which has escaped more or less extended notice. There is no other work in the English language in which is brought together an equal amount of information on everything connected with India, her people arts, manufactures, and products. To the merchant and agriculturist, to the man of science, whether botanist, zoologist, geologist, or meteorologist, no less than to the Oriental scholar, the historian, and literary student, it cannot fail to prove of the highest service as a work of reference. It is well deserving of a place in the library of every one interested in or connected with India." Indian Art: PRESERVATION OF NATIONAL MONUMENTS IN INDIA.
