3 parts in 1 vol. sm. 4to. MS. ON VELLUM, beautifully written, 135 leaves, 26 lines to the page; hf. bd. About 1190-1200 12 0 0 There are sixty-one Epistles by Hildebert. of which one is to the Queen of the English, and another to a Canon of Exeter. Then begins without any sufficient distinction the work of Alcuin in questions and answers sent by him with a preliminary letter to Singulfus. On page 19 ends the course of Int and R (ie., the rubricated catchwords for Interrogatio and Responsum). The work which proceeds without any heading on the next page may also be Alcuin's. It is remarkable for the numerality of its observations: for example, Tres sunt quibus reconciliari debent homines. . Quatuor sunt que conferunt humilitatem.. Duas ad intelligendum. . Quatuor sunt que impediunt .. confessionem. . Duo sunt amores etc.

On the reverse is an inscription Liber Sce Trinitatis de Kirkaam written in the thirteenth century. Fol. 2 has on the obverse a coloured diagram of the Temple, accompanied by Bede's description of it in the margin. On the reverse begins Reuelatio S. Ragneri mris which was written about 1180-90, and ends on the obverse of fol. 5. On the reverse of fol. 5 in the original scribe's hand: Liber ecclie xpi de Kirkaam. FROM KIRKHAM PRIORY.-The legend of St. Ragnar belongs to
Northampton where his relics lay, and where the miracles reported in
the story took place. A Norseman, servant of the priest Bruning in
the church of St. Peter in that city, always desirous of seeing his
"drotinum" (lord) by whom he meant Peter, was informed in a vision
that the Lord's accepted would be found in a certain place in the
church. And thus the remains of St. Ragener were found at North-
ampton in the days of Edward the Confessor. This story seems to be
unpublished.

CANONICARV.

The Canonical Epistles end on fol. 139a, and on the same page follows Incipit Praefat. Sci. Hieronimi in libro Dabre iamin id est verba Diervm. This preface ends on 140a, and is followed immediately by the text of Chronicles. The second Book of Chronicles ends on fol. 172. Fol. 173a: Incip praefatio Sci Hieronomi in Apocalypsi. On 1746 the text of the Apocalypse begins and it ends on 189a, col. 1. Incipit Comemoratio Basilica Dedicationis Sci Michaelis Archangeli Qvod est. IIII. kl. Octvbris. This ends on 1916. Fol. 192a, col. 1, contains the last 23 lines of the Apocalypse in an older hand than the same lines which occur in duplicate on fol. 189. 192a, col. 2: Explicit Apocalypsis Incipit Sermo Sci Ambrosii Episcopi de Assumpcione beate et gloriose Virginis Mariae que celebrat. xviii kldas Semtembris. On the back begins the Sermon with a curious and elaborate combination of capital letters. Adest dilectissimi Fratres dies valde venerabilis . . It ends on the reverse of 199 and is followed on the same page by Sermo Sci Ieronimi in Assvmpcione Sce Mariae ad Paula et Eustochium. The original writing of this discourse ends on 214a; a later hand has continued the matter on 214b and still left the piece unfinished.

Square folio, MS. ON VELLUM IN A FINE CAROLINGIAN HAND, written in double columns, 29 lines to the column; with numerous very large capitals ornamented with interlaced and grotesque work, and several intitulations in Uncials and Rustic Capitals, the great initials decorated in the Irish style; hf. bd.

A Frankish MS. of extremely interesting character, which represents the text of St. Jerome as purified by Alcuin. The arrangement of the books is very curious, and must have been suggested by some liturgical reason. Some of the constituent parts of this volume are very rare in MS., including even the first preface of St. Jerome. The book came from the monastery of St. Illidius in Clermont (Auvergne). BIBLIA LATINA. Fol. 1: GENESIS. | Incipit epla sci ieronimi pbri ad pau | linum de omnib3 diuine hystorie li | bris epm. FRATER | AMBRO | SIVS | tua. . Fol. 4: IN PRIN cipio creauit deus . .

Thick folio, A SPLENDIDLY ILLUMINATED MS. ON FINE VELLUM, 499 leaves, written in double columns, 52 lines to the column, in a beautiful Italian Gothic hand; with about 150 brilliant pieces of decorative design either in miniatures or figured borders; a grand volume in old red morocco gilt, bound for an Elector of Bavaria about 1770 with his arms on the sides About 1320 350 0 0

A remarkably fine and splendid volume. It is curious that the illustrations in the first half of the book are executed in the rather severe style of thirteenth-century French work, while all the rest are in the richer Italian style of the time at which the book was written. The work was, however, carried out entirely in the one place and at

the one period, and must have been done for some magnate of
Northern Italy. On the fly-leaf there is written in pencil "Ex Biblio-
theca Palatina Mannh." and the MS. is therefore supposed to have been
in the Mannheim library. The arms on the sides are, however, those
of Bavaria impaled with the shield of a consort and surmounted by a
royal crown. Mr. Stuart, of Aldenham Abbey, whose bookplate is
found inside the cover, has added his crest on the outside.

This volume fetched £490 at the Stuart sale at Christie's in
March, 1895.
