are social duties, too, which fall upon the Speaker, and which are of no slight importance. As the first Commoner, he holds periodical levees in his magnificent residence adjoining the House; and his weekly dinners. are a Parliamentary institution. It is no secret that these particular functions of the Speaker have been performed by Mr. Brand in a way which has commanded the admiration of all his subjects in that small but most important realm over which it is his duty to preside. It is when we recall the history of his office, and survey the great and varied duties attaching to it, that we can best appreciate the high and almost reverential regard in which the Speaker of the House of Commons is held by all the Members and officials of Parliament.
