"Dear me, what a cracked mirror I must be ! I confess that I was woolgathering. Do you think the Secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a very terrible being?"

"On the contrary, I should imagine him to be particularly mild and humane."

"That is a comfort, for I am going to introduce myself to him to-morrow." And then May explained the difficulty to her friend.

suppose you would despise masculine aid," Major Trevor said, wrinkling up his eyebrows in a deprecatory manner. "Otherwise, I would suggest that I should tackle the Secretary, and let you know the result. May I ?"

"Indeed, I shall be very grateful," May replied, earnestly.

"And now you must enjoy the music," Major Trevor said with a smile. So May laid aside her perplexities, and gave herself up to the enjoyment of the hour.

The Secretary proved amenable. He consented to let the rooms to May from I P.M. on

Saturday to IO A.M. on Monday morning, stipulating that whatever were the changes made in the apartments between those hours, they should be reduced to the pristine severity of a Board and Committee room by Monday morning. And this Major Trevor, in the name of Miss Pemberton, had faithfully engaged to do.

"I am so much obliged to you," May said, heartily. "It is so kind of you to take all this trouble."

"I did not think it trouble," Major Trevor said, a sudden flush suffusing his sun-burnt cheek. "We men are useful to do the rough work of the world," he went on lightly; "that is all I can say for my sex.'

"I am glad you are so humble-minded. Those are not my views, exactly."

"Won't you tell me what you think?"

No," May said, shaking her head.

"My

mind is full of practical details. We will define man's position in the universe when my club is fairly started."
