MAY made a point of attending Mr. Trevor's catechising every Sunday afternoon. She liked to be in sympathy with her new friends. The church seats were free and open, but the girls all managed to sit together, and they always retained a place for May, welcoming her generally with an eager smile. I am not sure that all of them would have attended so regularly but for the hope of seeing May. One of the girls, who was slightly deaf, complained to her that she could not always hear Mr. Trevor, and that she could not follow the references he gave out so rapidly.

"I don't think there's much use in my going, miss," she said.
