1. 1736. 1. 1737.

Elle m'aurait trompé!...can she have deceived me?
trame, plot; liter. the weft of a cloth. L. trama.

1. 1746. cette fourbe, that deceiver. Etym. It. furbo. Fourbe is also an abstract substantive, and means deceit. Thus :

(Racine, Athalie, III. 4.)

Scène VI.

1. 1760. See l. 941.

1. 1770. ma cartouche; cartouche means here a soldier's letter of discharge, stamped with the regimental seal, and containing a statement of the bearer's services. (Etym. It. cartoccio, from carta, a card.) Note that cartouche is masculine in the sense of an architectural ornament.

1. 1776. que sais-je? how do I know whether there were not many more?

Scène VIII.
