The varna system in the upanishads and all the vedas, which literally mean colour does not refer to the colour of the skin. Its a symbolic representation for the colour of the mind. The problem lies in english language translation of sanskrit texts, which translate varna & Jaati into-Caste or religious sub-caste. The Bhagavad Gita also refers to this, wherein krishna says, " ChaaturvarNyam MayA Shrustham", this is a pschycological classification of the human race. Not only people of India but the entire human race is broadly classified into four varnaas. This essentially means that by birth nobody is a brahmana, its a qualification to be achieved and not born with.
