In December died Anthony Collins, Efq; of Baddow-Hall, in Efex, he reputed Author of the Difcourfe n Free-thinking, the Grounds of the Chriftian Religion, the Scheme of li eral Prophecy, &c. Alfo Dr. Timoby Goodwin, Archbishop of Cahel Ireland: And Jane Wenham, ho in the latter End of Queen Anne's Reign was condemned for Vitchcraft at Hertford, but upon e Judge's Representation of the Affair, pardoned by her Majefty; fter which she was in a great Meaire fupported by Col. Plummer, he Earl and Countess Cowper, Goernor Collet, &c.

January 13, his Majefty went to e Houfe of Peers, opened the Sefon with a moft gracious Speech, 1 which he told his Parliament, That it was with great Satisfaction e acquainted them, that we had at ngth extricated ourfelves from the any Difficulties and Inconvenienies, that attended the uncertain State f Affairs in Europe, by having conluded an abfolute Peace with the Crown of Spain.

The young Czar, Peter II. died t Mofcow, of the Small Pox, and vas fucceeded, by the Czarina Anne, Duchefs Dowager of Couriand, Daughter of the Czar John, half Brother to the Czar Peter I.

At Home Daniel Finch, Earl of Vinchelsea and Nottingham; and David Colyear, Earl of Portmore, Governor of Gibraltar, and the first General on the British Establishment, ied in this Month.

In February, there were great Deates in the House of Commons in Relation to fome Works carrying on by the Inhabitants of Dunkirk, n Order to repair their Harbour, Complaint was made of this Affair by the British Minifter at the French Court, which procured an Order rom the King, to forbid the car.

rying on any fuch Works, and to demolish any that may have been erected contrary to the Treaty of Utrecht.

The noted Col. Charteris was capitally convicted and received Sentence of Death at the Old-Baily, for a Rape committed by him upon Anne Bond, his Servant Maid: But when the Judges who fat upon the Trial came to make their Report, his Majefty having heard feverally their Opinions upon the Cafe, was pleafed by the unanimous Advice of his Privy Council, to order that he fhould be pardoned, and forthwith admitted to Bail to plead the faid Pardon next Seffions.

Dr. Thomas Bray, Minister of St. Botolph, Aldgate, died about this Time. He formed the Defign, and was the principal Solicitor for procuring the Charter of the Society for propagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts; and contrived, and by the Affiftance of his Friends, founded in Great-Britain and the Plantations, above 150 Parochial Libraries, from 10. to 50l. Value.

In March, Arthur Stert, Efq; Jobn Goddard, Efq; and Benjamin Keene, Efq; his Majefty's Minister at the Court of Spain, were appointed Commiffaries on the Part of Great Britain for fettling and adjufting the different Demands and Pretenfions of Great Britain and Spain on each other, agreeable to the Treaty of Seville.

The Landgrave of Heffe Caffel died about the End of this Month: The King of Sweden, his Son, was immediately proclaimed his Succeffor, and the Regency conferred on his Brother, Prince William.

About this Time the Penfion Bill was paffed by the House of Commons, and rejected by the Lords.

The Earl of Stair was appointed Lord Admiral of Scotland, in the Room of the Duke of Queensbury and Dover, who refigned.

On April 30, it was agreed in Common Council, That all the Fines that should arife from thofe Gentlemen that were nominated for Sheriffs, fhould be appropriated towards building a Manfion-Houfe for the Lord-Mayor for the Time being.

About this Time died Sir Edward Knatchbull, Bart. Representative for Leftwithiel in Cornwall, and in the laft Parliament Knight of the Shire for the County of Kent: And Lord Chief Baron Pengelly, who was fucceeded in that Poft by Mr. Justice Reynolds.

May 15, the King went to the Houfe of Peers, and gave the Roy. al Affent to An Act for taking off certain Duties on Salt: An Act for the better Regulation of Juries, and feveral other Acts; after which, he made a moft gracious Speech to both Houles, and prorogued the Parliament.

The fame Day in the Evening, the Lord Viscount Townshend delivered up the Seal of his Office, as one of his Majefty's Principal Secretaries of State; and at the fame Time refigned his Commiffion of Lord Lieutenant of the County of Norfolk.

In this Month died the honour ble Mrs. Arabella Godfrey, Sitter the late Duke of Marlborough, and Relict of Col. Godfrey, She had Ifue by King James II. the ar Duke of Berwick, and the Lady Dowager Waldegrave, who died a few Weeks before. Sir Ja fham, Knight of the Shire for the County of Northampton, died alo about this Time.

The Right Honourable the Lord Harrington was on the 13th of Jun appointed one of his Majesty' principal Secretaries of State. And a few Days after, his Grace the Duke of Dorfet was declared Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

On the 18th his Royal Highness the Duke, and the Earls of Cheperfill and Burlington, were inftalled Knights of the Garter at Windler, in the Prefence of the Sovereign, with great Order and Magnif cence.

About this Time died Sir William Pennington, Baronet; Sir Richard Haw, Baronet, who ferved in Parliament many Years for the County of Wilts; and James Maccarteney, Efq; Lieutenant General of his Majefty's Forces, who was engaged as a Second, in the memorable Duel between the late Duke Hamilton and the Lord Mohun, in Hyde Park. And a little after died Major General Crowder, who in the Reign of King James II. was a Colonel of Horfe in the Camp at Hownflow.

In Auguft, Victor Amadeus IF. King of Sardinia, Duke of Savoy, &c. made a general Abdication of his Kingdoms and Dominions in Favour of his Son Charles-Emmanuel, Prince of Piemont.

In September, the Queen was pleafed to fettle 30l. per Annum, on Stephen Duck, a poor Thresher at Clarendon Park in Wiltshire; and likewife to give him a little Houfe at Richmond in Surry to live in, on Account of his feveral ingenious poetical Compofitions.

In this Month died the Reverend Mr. Lawrence Echard, Archdeacon of Stow, Author of the Roman Hiftory, the Ecclefiaftical History, the Hiftory of England, &c. And Charles Fitz-Roy, Duke of Cleveland, and Southampton, the eldest natural Son of King Charles II. by Barbara Villiers, Duchefs of Cleveland.

The Beginning of October, Frederick IV. King of Denmark and Norway, departed this Life at Odenfee, in the 60th Year of his Age, and was fucceeded by his Son Chriftian VI.

In this and the following Months, People were greatly alarmed with the Villainous Practice of fending threatning Letters to Perfons, to

for Ireland, and firft Clerk of the Privy Council in Great Britain: And Henry Scot, Earl of Delerant, one of the Sixteen Peers for Sad, and youngest Son of James Dike of Monmouth, who was beheaded on Tower Hill in the Reign of King James II.

A. D. extort Money from them, de- Efq; Principal Secretary of State 1730. manding particular Sums to be left in certain Places, and threatning with the most horrid Imprecations, to burn their Houfes, and deftroy them and their Families, upon their Non-Compliance. It began at Bristol, where the Houfe of one Mr. Packer, a Merchant, was actually fired by the Villains, and burnt down; and fpread itfelf over a great Part of the Kingdom, many Perfons in Town and Country having fuch Letters fent to them; which occafioned a Proclamation to be published for fuppreffing fuch Practices.

Dr. William Talbot, Lord Bifhop of Durham, died on the 10th of October; upon which Dr. Edward Chandler was tranflated from the See of Litchfield and Coventry to that of Durham, and Dr. Richard Smallbroke from the See of St. David's to that of Litchfield and Co

ventry.

In November, Colley Cibber, Efq; the famous Comedian, was made Poet Laureat to his Majefty, in the Room of the Reverend Mr. Lawrence Eufden, deceased. And in the fame Month died Mr. 7o. hua Gee, an eminent Quaker, Author of a Treatife relating to the Trade and Navigation of Great Britain; and Sir Hallewell Tynte, Baronet, Member of Parliament for Bridgwater.

The Duty on Salt expiring on Christmas Day, according to the late Act, about 500 Officers belong ing to the Salt Office were by that Means difcharged.

Notwithstanding the Treaty of Seville, the Affairs of Earpe was this Year in as great a State of U certainty as before. The Empor feem'd inflexible againft fending Spanish Troops into Italy, mafifted on Neutral Troops accorting to the Quadruple Alliance; actually made great Warlike Pr parations, fending Troops into de Milanese and other Parts of lim. to maintain the Rights of th Empire there. On the other hand Spain was impatient to have the Ar ticle relating to Don Carles and the Spanish Garifons executed, preffe the Allies to make good their Ergagements, and made heavy Com plaints of their Delays, and in Rey fentment even detained the Eft of the Flotilla. The Allies at fr prepared for the Italian Expeditin but the great Diffenfions bewee the Emperor and Spain caused i be put off for this Year. Fran feemed to be for pufhing Ma against the Emperor, and co to a War, but England and Hol were for more cool Measures. Several Attempts were made for an Accommodation, which, tho' witout Effect this Year, yet in the following ended in the Treaty Vienna between the Emperor Great Britain, and putting the vourite Spanish Scheme of the Ir Expedition in Execution.

On the 25th a Duel was fought the Right Honourable William ulteney, Efq; and the Lord Harvey, the Green Park. After four or e Paffes, Mr. Pulteney gave Lord arvey two flight Wounds, one in s Arm, and the other between e Shoulder and Neck, when having ofed in they were parted and difmed by their two Seconds. Sir Robert Raymond, Knight, Lord hief Juftice of the King's Bench, as created a Peer, by the Title Lord Raymond, Baron of Abbotsangley in the County of Hertford. Dr. Elias Sydall, Dean of Canrbury, was made Bishop of St.

avid's.

His Serene Highnefs the Duke of arma died in this Month: And General Stampa, with a Body of mperialists, took Poffeffion of the Duchies of Parma and Placentia or Don Carlos, whom the Duke ad by Will declared Heir to his Dominions, in Failure of Male Iffue y his Duchefs, who was now hought to be with Child; but it proved otherwife.

The Beginning of February there vere great Debates in Parliament elating to the 12000 Hefian Forces in English Pay; which were continued for another Year.

About this Time died Sir John Cotton, Baronet, defcended from Sir Robert Cotton, who gave the famous Cottonian Library to the Publick; Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas, an ingenious and learned Gentlewoman, and Author of feveral Poems: And Mr. Francis Bird, a famous Statuary, who erected many ftately Tombs and magnificent Monuments in Westminfier Abby, the Statues about St. Paul's,

&c.

In March, the Common Council A. D. of London almoft unanimoufly agreed 1731. to petition the Parliament against the Charitable Corporation; which Affair foon after came on in the Houfe.

Three Perfons were convicted at three different Places, of fending threatning Letters, demanding Money, &c. But in moft Places the Perfons tried for that Crime were all acquitted.

The Princefs Dowager of Hannau, of the Houfe of Anspach, the Queen's Sifter; and Auguftus William, Duke of Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, died in this Month.

John Lade, Efq; in the Commiffion of the Peace for the County of Surry, and Thomas Robinson, of Rookby Park in Yorkshire, Efq; were created Baronets.

The Penfion Bill which a fecond Time had paffed the House of Commons, was again rejected by the House of Lords.

The Treaty of Vienna between the Emperor and King of GreatBritain was figned on the 16th of this Month; in which the Guarantee of the Pragmatick Sanction, or Aufirian Succeffion; and the Affair of introducing Don Carlos and the Spanish Garifons into Italy, were fettled to the mutual Satisfaction of the interefted Powers. To this Treaty the States General and the King of Spain afterwards acceded.

April 9, his Majesty went to the Houfe of Peers, and gave the Roy. al Affent to, An Act for the farther Application of the finking Fund, by paying off one Million of South Sea Annuities.

In this Month died, Robert Benfon Lord Bingley, Tieafurer of his Majetty's Houfhold: Sir William Morgan, Knight of the Bath: Sir Harry Dutton Colt, Bart. and the noted Mr. Daniel de Foe.
