The design of this work is to provide students of Persian with a Dictionary of portable size. It is mainly intended for students in High Schools and Colleges, who have long felt the want of a cheap and useful work of reference.

Great pains have been taken in the selection of the matter of the book, so as to make it a work of general usefulness. It is hoped that it will meet. all the ordinary requirements of students, and increase the facilities, which at present are by no means great, for learning the language.

The book contains almost all Persian words which are in general use; at least none are omitted which are likely to occur in School books, and in the ordinary reading of students of Persian.

Pronunciation, which is a great stumbling block in the way of those learning Persian, is here attended to, and every word in the Dictionary has its pronunciation given in Roman characters according to the Jonesian system of transliteration.*

Etymology, which most lexicographers of Persian, for some reason or other, omit to insert freely in their works, has not been left out; and although
