PREFACE.

THE purpose of this little treatise is to bring together, in a convenient form, all the information I could obtain relative to a subject which has of late years engrossed so large a share of the attention, not only of the medical profession, but of scientific men generally, in all parts of the world—the localization of speech, and the causes which interfere with the proper manifestation of that faculty.

The different parts of this essay have already appeared, at certain intervals, in the pages of the Journal of Mental Science, and it is in deference to the opinion of those whose judgment I am bound to respect, that I now venture to publish them in a collected form.

If I have failed to contribute anything towards bridging the chasm which separates matter from mind, my researches will, at all events, tend to shew how little we really know about that wonderful piece of mechanism-the human brain.

FREDERIC BATEMAN.

Norwich, May, 1870.
