348*

A work almost unknown in American libraries. Crespel joined the band of missionaries and went to Quebec in 1724. After a journey beyond Chicagou to Wisconsin, he returned to Montreal, Niagara, and Frontenac, and was thence sent to Lake Champlain where he arrived in 1735. The following year he returned to Quebec, and thence set out for France, but was wrecked at the mouth of the St. Laurence on the island of Anticosti. For several months he and his companions were unable to get away, and most of them died, but the survivors were at last rescued and returned to Quebec, whence Crespel sailed for France in October, 1738.

In this edition several explanatory footnotes are added, which render it more
useful than the original of 1742.

are many similar instances throughout the book. In 1632, the first word was NVEVA
