The object which the editor had in view, in making these selections, was the improvement of armorial designs for plate, book-plates, stamps and furniture, which have hitherto been executed with a lamentable want of taste. 80 STOEFFLERI (Ioannis) Calendarivm Romanvm magnum. Gemeiner lobli-cher Eydgnosch Stetten, Landen vnd Völckeren Chronickwir-diger thaaten beschreybung. . . Durch Johann Stumpffen beschriben . . . 2 vols., stout folio, Gothic Letter, with nearly two thousand woodcuts, including maps, portraits of distinguished personages, and a most interesting assemblage of designs representing scenes in Swiss, German, French and general European history, by Virgil Solis, and apparently also by members of the Holbein family; in the original oak boards, covered with stamped hogskin Zurych bey Christoffel Froschouer, 1548 A magnificent copy, in superb condition, with an early German coloured bookplate (a fruit-piece). This work is one of the most magnificent artistic productions of the 16th century. As a book with illustrations it may be compared with the Nurnberg Chronicle (which was probably in the mind of the publisher) but the designs in this volume are of high artistic character. On folio 23 of the first part we find the following statement :"Sonderlich ist die edel kunst der Buchtruckerey . . . bey de Teutsche zu Meyntz vnd Straaszburg, durch Johann Fau-stiù im Jar Christi 1446. erfunden vñ auf bracht durch welche kust alle gute bücher der alten widerum erneüwert ans liecht gebracht, auch in Teütschen landen so vil edler und guter ingenia erweckt und zu der gschrifft gezogen sind." Picturesque Sketches in BELGIUM and GERMANY. 3 Series, impl. folio, complete, 79 fine lithographs of the Exteriors and Interiors of celebrated Buildings, the Groups and Figures in Medieval Costume (pub. £12. 12s), hf. bd. morocco 89 90 1840-50 the same, 3 Series, impl. folio, the plates mounted on cardboard and beautifully coloured (pub. £30. 10s), in three portfolios 550 1840-50 12 0 0 the same, the rare Third Series separately. Impl. folio, coloured, in a portfolio 1850 The fame of Louis Haghe, as a delineator of Medieval Architecture, especially of Interiors, is unrivalled. The picturesque views contained in the above work, represent the glorious Monuments which time, revolutions, and so-called improvements are rapidly effacing. Many of them, also, illustrate with appropriate costume the struggles of the Flemish against Spanish tyranny. For the Drawings which form this interesting collection, Mr. Haghe expressly travelled through Belgium and Germany, and they have been selected from his portfolio with the greatest regard to their historical interest and beauty of architectural detail. The cathedrals and churches display the most elaborate shrines, altars, chapels, tombs, and confessionals-the cloisters of the convent, the interior of the refectory, the baptistry, and the sacristy, form subjects of extreme interest-chivalry of knighthood shines in the baronial halls; the councils of the Burghers debate in their chambers of state, and the merchants transact their affairs in the Bourse; thus combining every variety of architecture from the chaste Gothic to the more showy and decorative style of the Renaissance. The landscape scenery of the continent is constantly repeated in all its varying forms, though but few of our artists have attempted to delineate the rich and florid specimens of ancient architecture which embellish the cities and towns of Belgium and Germany-Germany, rich in the historical recollections of former greatness; and Belgium, the neutral ground upon which the fate of Europe has been so often decided. 91 WLSON (Marc de) Sieur de la COLOMBIERE, La Science Heroique traitant de la Noblesse, de l'Origine des Armes, de leurs Blasons et Symboles . . .
