of its execution, and it is understood that the expense of its production is far in advance of anything that its sale can realize.

The Life and Labours of Albany Fonblanque, is a volume dedicated to the memory of one who is allowed to have been the most brilliant Journalist that England ever produced. It comprises selections from his articles in the Examiner newspa. per when that periodical was a power in the State, both of politics and literature, prefaced by a brief but interesting and well written memoir by his Nephew. In this sketch we meet under new phases with the "philosophical Radical party" of whom lately so much has been heard. as John Stuart Mill, George Grote, &c. Some letters by Mill show him to have been a much more active and energetic party man, than would be gathered from his autobiography, and that the party, small as it was, contained within itself many elements of disunion. Fonblanque himself was a born Journalist, pur et simple, devoting himself to perfect the art carried by them to such excellence of brilliant and incisive leader writing. The specimens given in this volume supplement the selection published by himself in 1837 called England under Seven Administrations and relate to a more recent time, between that date and 1860, when his connection with the Examiner finally ceased-though some years previously he had resigned the actual editorship to Mr. John Forster. A single sentence will show how sharply Fonblanque could see and express a truth: "Macaulay's facility of judgment can never rise to the catholic or get beyond a special plea." "He is a great master of color who cannot draw, he fastens upon a feature and gives

it as a man."

The Lectures by Henry Rogers, The Superhuman Origin of the Bible Inferred from Itseif, exhibit all the merits that have gained for the writings of this distinguished polemic a high place among the theological works of the day. Dictionary of Sects, Heresies Ecclesiastical, Parties and Schools of Religious Thought, edited by Rev. John Henry Blunt, is a companion to the Dictionary of Doctrinal and Historical Theology lately emanating from the same source. It is a contribution of great value to the theological library, exhibiting a breadth and comprehensiveness of information rarely found in English books, and due, no doubt, to a study

of German and Continental authoritities. Though written confessedly on High Church principles," its tone is temperate and marked by an absence of the presumptuous judgments that offend without convincing.

Among miscellaneous books, are A Brief Memoir of Princess Charlotte of Wales, with Selections from Her Correspondence and Other Unpublished Papers, by Lady Rose Weigall. It recalls attention to the short and troubled career, cheered towards its end by a gleam of happiness, of one in whom the hopes of the English nation centered sixty years ago, while the poignancy of grief excited by her loss finds enduring utterance in the writings of two men so generally different as Lord Byron and Robert Hall. The favorite study of folk lore brings forward from opposite regions Tales from the Fjeld;

from the Norse of P. Chr. Asbjornsen, translated by the Scandinavian scholar G. W. Dasent, and Folk Lore of Rome, Collected by Word of Mouth from the People, by R. H. Buck, and exceedingly curious in its illustrations of southern ways of thought. Prof. Vambéry still plays the part of Cassandra in vainly attempting to arouse the English Cabinet to the danger of Russian aggressions in the East in his Central Asia and the Anglo-Russian Frontier Question, but all such national suspicions are drowned by the marriage-bells sounding gaily from St. Petersburgh.

The prospect is bad for American purchasers who desire to make a name as collectors in literature or art. There has not been sold at auction (the great source of supply for dealers as well as private buyers,) either a fine library or a first-rate picture, in London, during the present season, and very little is in prospect for the future. Millioniares therefore, with the money burning in their pockets, must be content to wait until the opportunity offers itself, and then of course the competition is so great that prices are raised far beyond all precedent. The only really important library looked forward to as coming into the market is that of the late Sir Wm. Tite, the architect of the Royal Exchange. He was one of those fortunate people who, (in his own words), "inherited a fortune, married a fortune, and made a fortune." He died last year, leaving personal property of about $2,500,000, and was of late years a liberal buyer of manuscripts and early printed books, &c. His library will be sold this summer, and the amount looked forward to be realized by it is something approaching to that of the famous Perkins library sale of last year. In fact "Bibliomania" seems dying out, as a pursuit, for want of the material to gratify it and the multiciplicity of permanent libraries established every year render the quantity of books within reach of ordinary buyers less and less. Engravings rise in the same proportion, and it is curious, though true, that fine mezzotint plates of some of Sir Joshua Reynolds' portraits will bring now more than he received for the original painting. A very in teresting sale of engravings took place a few weeks since, of a collection made 150 years ago by a painter of the time, celebrated in the verses of Prior-Hugh Howard. It had been stored up in Ireland over a century and a half, and now produces nearly £5,000. It was quite general in its contents, almost every school of art being represented, and it was interesting to see how little that was truly good had depreciated in that time in spite of the influence or fashion that regulates all things. The early Italian prints and etchings commanded the highest price, one of them a portrait by Marc Antonio, of Aretino, a plate about the size of a page of THE BOOK BUYER, brought the second highest price ever given for an engraving, £780. The German Masters, Albert Durer, Lucas Van Leyden, &c., are equally in demand, as were also English mezzotints, at very high rates. The whole sale furnished an excellent commentary on Dr. Willshire's Introduction to the Study and Collection of Ancient Prints lately published.
