SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & CO., SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG, 654 Broadway, New York.

NEW YORK, JUNE 15th, 1874.

THE DEVIL IN HISTORY AND LETTERS. IT cannot fail to interest the general reader to learn that Messrs. SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG have in press a Catalogue of books relating to that august personage whose name we utter with bated breath, and whom we find it easier to designate by some pseudonym as the "Gentleman in Black," or, "Old Nick," etc. This Catalogue has been prepared by Mr. Henry Kernot, a gentleman eminently qualified by his life-long familiarity with books for the curious labor he has undertaken. It will be a veritable Catalogue raisonée, giving besides the titles of books brief summaries of their characteristics and scope. It will be arranged chronologically and will represent a book of every class relating to its general theme, including both its grave and humorous aspects in history, philosophy, and theology. It is needless perhaps to add that this Catalogue is quite sui generis—itself a curiosity and enriched as it will be by the compiler's industry and knowledge-with anecdotal and historical annotations it will itself deserve a place in every wellappointed library; it is hardly necessary to state that all the works catalogued in it, and it includes nearly everything on the subject ever issued, are now in the stock of S. W. & A. This valuable list will be mailed to any address on receipt of twenty-five cents.

A few copies will be handsomely printed on large paper with a frontispiece representing his Satanic Majesty at twelve different historic periods. Copies of this edition will be sent on receipt of fifty cents. The catalogue will be ready for distribution in the course of two or three weeks, and orders are solicited.

THE "BRIC-A-BRAC" SERIES. THE question of the propriety of the application of the te. m 66 Bric-a Brac" to the series of works published by SCRIBNER. ARMSTRONG & Co., the initial volume of wh ch has lely appeared. has given rise to not a little discussi n. Generally t is accepted as a telling embodiment of the idea which Mr. S oddard has so happily i'lustrated by his kilful selec ions f om the R collections of Chorley, Planche and Young, and by his admirable combination of the material which was at his disposal. The New York Times for instance. recognizes the aptness of the term, by commencing a column and a half review of the initial volume with he sentence, There is bric-a-brac in literature as well as in art." Several other similar allusions show that it accepts the title without question as an appropriate one.

[ocr errors]

The Tribune has this pleasant and witty allusion to the controverted point :

We Americans are apt to deal barbarously with foreign tongues, and from broken China to boardingschool Freuch, the land is strewed with the mangled We have made parts of the speech of strauger.

[ocr errors]

Boquet" much commouer than " Bouquet," and even when we spell it rig tly we accent it wrongly nine times out of ten; even people of education, and newspapers supposed to be edit d by such persons, will, from time to time, print "sou'riquet" for "sobriquet,' aud pu a circumflex accent over crème, while coupé rarely gets any accent at all, aud recherché fares no better. Sometimes, however, this blundering red ems itself by an unconscious wittiness, as when the other day a correspondent wrote us asking the meaning of the title of Mr. St ddard's new literary venture. The bric-a-bra Series," of which one delightful volume has Las just appeared. Our rural friend wanted to know by this was called the "brickbat series!" Considering the real natu e of b ic-a-brac in general, could a more unconsciously happy definition have been hit upou?

A highly esteemed correspondent, whose name would carry weight if we were permitted to quote it. follows up a previous criticism upon the appropriateness of the title with this explanation of the reason for his objections:

[ocr errors]

The Bric-a-Brac volume is very nicely got up and looks well; the cover is quite tasteful. You are out about the meaning of the name, however, and that is why I said it was inappropriate. Bric-a-brac" means no! "choice bits," but literally, "odds and ends," broken fragments, scra s, rubbish," &c. and is a phrase made by onomatopoeia (as Max Muller would say) from the sound made by smashing a thing to bits. That matters very 1.ttle, however. I have rot looked over the selections, but Stoddard ought to know what people li e.

To procure an authoritative opinion upon the quest on it was referred to a philologist whose expression would be conclusive if it were altrivial a matter. His decision was given in the lowable to give his name in connection with so following note:

[ocr errors]

THE use of the word Bric-a-Brac is far from being 80 familiar to me that I should be able to speak with any

authority as to its application. According to my understanding of it, you have used it very appropriately as the name of your series. Such is also the opinion of Mr. and Mr. *, with whom I have talked about it, both of them disclaiming, like myself, any power to say aught autl. ritative. There sn't any etymology to help one, and the phrase is one belonging to wealthy dilletauti rather than men of learning or the general public; it comes out of the Freuch to us; and I have looked in Littre's dictionary, with c nfir ation of my impressio. The book, by the way, is a very pretty and entertaining one. and I thank you for it. One or two of my family have made quite a hole in its contents already.

There we may leave the question of the propriety of the use of the term "Bric-a-Brac" in this connection.

Whatever differences of opinion there may be upon this particular point all who have taken up the volume are unanimous as regards its thoroughly readable and entertaining character, and the beauty with which it is issued. Nowhere has the general opinion been more happily summed up than in the Christian Union, the notice from which we give entire.

The book-lover, who takes up for the first time this lit le volume, is tempted to linger for a few mor ents in admiration of its outside, Ike one who pauses to study the architecture of a play-house even while the play is going on within. Of all the recent varieties that have come to our notice of quaint orLamental binding, this is the quaintest. And it is very dainty, also, and sees to fit, by its symbolic pictures done in blac and gilt and gray, the somewhat motley but always intellectua ly flavored contents of the boo.

It is the plan of tue publishers to present a s ries of books made up of choice portious culed out of the large and char ing fields of modern biography, personal anecdote and I terary reminiscence. For editor they have secured the services of Ricard Henry Stod dard, the poet, who, indeed, has al. the qualities of taste, general insight and various literary acquaintance to fit him for the task. The volume now before us is the first of the series happily called "Bric-a-Brac," and is so finely wrought in all respects that it may be said to insure beforehand the popularity of all that are to follow.

It is with a wisdom that carries its own warrant with it that Mr. Stoddard has bought to ther in this volume three of the most delightful li erary sketchers of our time Chorley, Planche and Young. They were contemporaries, and friends; two of them were near neighbors; and, as Mr. Stoddard adds, "each knew the friends of the others, and recorded in some instances the impressious they made upon him." Thus, they make us acquainted with the intellectu 1 life of the same literary period, "the most brilliant as regards its literature, of any since

The spacious times of great Elizabeth,' and coming so near our own that we are stirred as by personal emotion at the mention of its illustrious names."

The service which Mr. Stoddard has now rendered us is that of a trusty and discriminating literary friend who has gone through the voluminous and heavily padded volumes in which the reminiscences of Chorley, Planche and Young are recorded, and has gleaued for us the best. To all lovers of literary anecdote, and of gossip whose whispers are the murmurs of fame, the bock will prove a refreshment in many a tired mood.

SUNDAY SCHOOL COMMENTARIES. ALL who are engaged upon the International Uniform Series of Sunday school lessons will be grateful for the issue in che p, compact form of three such admirable Commenari-s as Lange on Mak, $1.50; Alexander on Mark,

*Both philologists of the widest and most accurate at

$1.25;. and Owen on Mark. $1.00. These three volumes constitute an equipment so complete that the teachers who will rovide themselves with them can need nothing more to insure them thorough understanding of this part of the Sacred Word.

ST. NICHOLAS FOR JULY

IS UNUSUALLY brilliant. There is a story by Bret Harte, about a wonderful little grizzly bear, in which the varied and curious fortunes of the animal, "Baby Sylvester by name, are told with all the author's accustomed quaintness and humor. "Baby" must have been a charming bear. "Your caressing hand," says the author, "sank away in his fur with dreamy languor. To look at him long was an intoxication of the senses; to pat him was a wild delirium; to embrace him, an utter demoralization of the intellectual faculties." The story is finely illustrated by Sheppard and James C. Beard, one of the engravings being a capital picture of the author disturbed in his sleep by the infant grizzly. William Cullen Bryant contributes a beautiful little poem from the Spanish, and there is a very well-told story of the war of 1812, called " Rebecca, the Drummer," by Charles Barnard, which will stir up the patriotism in girls as well as boys Then we have an article on "Fire-Crackers and the Fourth of July," by Wm C. Rideing, in which the mysterious inscriptions on packs of crackers are explained, and the whole subject of fireworks is discussed. This article is well illustrated. and the last picture, by Thomas Moran, shows a pack of fire-crackers flashing and banging away, as they will on the glorious Fourth. Jack-in-the-Pulpit" is full of information, and The Letter Box." evidently a great favorite with the boys and girls, is larger than usual this month. Of course the number is full of good pictures, and one article contains five Magic Pictures," which are sure to create a sensation.

"BRIC-A-BRAC" FOR SUMMER READING.

THERE is no question that for "summer reading" here is nothing plea-anter in the field than Bric-a-Brac; and what is good for summer reading is good for reading all the year round. The first volume reached a second edition within a tew days, and Mr. Stod ard is hard at work on the second, which will take the summer tourist" at the very height of his ennui

In this second volume there will be given anecdote biographies of Thackeray, Dickens, and others. As no life has yet been written of Thac eray. and it is extremely doubtful whether his family will ever give their consent to the publication of one, this collection of, and regarding him has peculiar value and interest.

The third volume will probably comprise everything worth preservation in Prosper Merime's Letters to an Incognita, George Sand's Impressions and Recollections and Twenty-Five
