NOW READY:

A Superbly Illustrated Book of Travel.

TRAVELS ACROSS SOUTH AMERICA,

From the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.

By PAUL MARCOY.

Illustrated with five hundred engravings on wood, drawn by E. Riou, and maps printed in colors from drawings by the author.

2 vols., 4to. cloth.....

..$15.00

This is by far the most superbly illustrated work of travel ever offered for sale in this country. The engravings are throughout executed with surprising delicacy and finish; the designs show that grace in execution of which French artists only seem capable, and the text introduces us into a region which, although abundantly interesting, is by no means so well known to us as are many countries which are more remote from us. In all mechanical details these volumes represent the very perfection of book-making.

FROM THE LONDON TIMES.

M. Marcoy has a full share of the spirit, vivacity and garrulity which make a French traveller the most charming of companions in his own book. With sufficient science to write with intelligence and exactness of the flora and fauna of the country he visits, of the ethnological and idiomatic distinctions which characterise these tribes of Indians, his strongest point and the chief attraction of his work is his great skill as a draughtsman. He sketches nearly everything which he describes, and gives us 500 pictures of the life, manners and scenery which come under his eye. Such a book is a treat which the reader does not often get. If, which we hope will not prove to be the case, the public will not believe that there is more sound instruction in such a work as this than in a geographic manual, and more amusement than in a novel, we can only say let him alone.

A Splendid Gift Book.

BY THE AUTHOR OF "PICCIOLA."

MYTHS OF THE RHINE.

By X.-B. SAINTINE, author of " Picciola." Translated from the French by Prof. SCHele De Vere. Profusely illustrated by GUSTAVE Doré.

One vol, royal octavo, extra cloth, full gilt side and top, in box,

$10.00; extra morocco, $18.00

“My purpose in writing this work," says M. Santine, "was nothing more than to try and collect along the banks of the Rhine all the curious myths which have survived the ancient creeds of Europe, for they have all come to the great river. There the traveler finds piled up, after the manner of alluvial layers, all the ancient fables, all the marvelous and often childish tales to which the credulity and lively imagination of our forefathers gave a ready welcome." A work upon such a theme, by such a writer as the author of the famous story "Picciola," and illustrated by such an artist as Doré, presents a variety of attractions seldom comprised in a single volume. This translation of the "Myths of the Rhine," by M. Schéle De Vere, the first ever made into English, admirably preserves the inimitable grace of the original, while Doré's illustrations range from the grotesque to the sublime, and embrace some of his most pleasing and characteristic work.

A BEAUTIFUL GIFT BOOK FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.
BY THE AUTHOR OF "HANS BRINKER."

RHYMES AND JINGLES.

By MARY MAPES DODGE, author of "Hans Brinker."

One vol., small 4to, cloth, $3.00.

Profusely illustrated.

As the pages of "St. Nicholas " abundantly prove, no writer now living knows so well as Mrs. Dodge how to captivate and delight children. The "Rhymes and Jingles " here collected are full of life and fun, and many of them have already become classics in juvenile literature. The illustrations are profuse and most admirably executed; and altogether the collection must be one of the most popular of its class.

AN IMPORTANT THEOLOGICAL WORK.

THE PARACLETE,

An Essay on the Personality and Ministry of the Holy Ghost, with some Reference to Current Discussions. One vol., 12mo, $2.00.

The fact that this remarkable work is published anonymously, taken in connection with its bold tone and vigorous style, must excite curiosity as to its authorship and command for it wide attention. "How far is it possible," the author asks, "to divest the Christian doctrine of the Holy Ghost of such mystery as is superstitious rather than religious? Christian theology affirms the existence of a Ghost-a spiritual Person-who is the highest Teacher of truth and the supreme Minister of comfort. Does that dogma carry with it such a quality of mystery as resents the investigation of reason, or is it possible so to use reason as to see, even with considerable distinctness, that the word Ghost is the proper development of the word Person, and that without such progress and consummation the word 'Person' would become a limited and self-exhausting term?" This inquiry is, in the first place, theological and expository, occupying the Christian standpoint, and endeavoring to trace the outline and establish the argument of a positive faith. In the next place, it is almost wholly critical and controversial, dealing frankly with objectors and objections, and examining in a fearless but equitable way the pretensions of many Sadducees. The treatise will be found a valuable aid by Christian men who desire to show cause why they retain their old theological landmarks, and will enable them to give conclusive answer to the Sadduceeism of the time, which is so persistent and boastful in many directions.

A NEW VOLUME OF LANGE'S COMMENTARY.

JOB.

By Dr. OTTO ZOCKLER.

Translated and enlarged by Prof. Tayler Lewis and Prof. Evans.
Dr. Philip Schaff, General Editor.

I vol., 8vo, cloth...

..$5.00

The labors of Dr. Tayler Lewis, and of Prof. Evans, make this one of the most scholarly and valuable of the volumes thus far produced in connection with this great Commentary. A metrical version by Dr. Tayler Lewis, and a preface with numerous notes, which extend in many cases to the length and dignity of separate essays, give the highest critical character to the volume. An extremely interesting essay upon Hebrew Poetry, by Dr. Philip Schaff, prefaces the volume.

Of "Lange's Commentary" there have thus far been issued eighteen volumes, as follows:

ON THE OLD TESTAMENT:

Genesis, (1 vol.)-Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, (1 vol.)-First and Second Kings, (1 vol.)-Job, (1 vol.)-The Psalms, (1 vol.)-Proverbs; Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon, (1 vol.)-Jeremiah and Lamentations, (1 vol.) -The Twelve Minor Prophets, (1 vol.)

ON THE NEW TESTAMENT:

Matthew, (1 vol.)-Mark and Luke, (1 vol.)-John, (1 vol.)—Acts, (1 vol.)-Romans, (1 vol.)-Corinthians, (1 vol.)-Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Collosians, (1 vol.)-Thessalonians, Timothy, Titus, Hebrews and Philemon, (1 vol.)-James, Peter, John and Jude, (1 vol.)-Revelation, (1 vol.)

8vo, per vol. in Sheep $6.50; In Half Calf, $7.50; Cloth, $5.00.
