that the volume can be used with great ease. I should be very glad to see the work introduced into chapel and other services; for I believe its use would enhance both the spiritual enjoyment and the religious development of the worshiper.

Yours, very truly,

J. F. HURST.
From Rev. Dr. T. W. CHAMBERS.
NEW YORK, June 21st, 1875.

Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co.

I have examined the "SERVICE OF PRAISE" which you were kind enough to send me. The book seems equally happy in conception and execution, and must prove no small auxiliary in promoting the increase of responsive worship in non-liturgical churches. The selections of Scripture are appropriate, and the lyrics have a smaller admixture of rhymed and measured prose than is usually found in such collections. I look with favor upon anything which promises to excite a deeper interest in worship as distinguished from mere preaching, and surely such manuals as Mr. EUSTIS'S must tend in this direction.

Very truly yours,

T. W. CHAMBERS. Besides these, a number of notices have been received from both the secular and the religious press, all of the same general tenor. We append

a few extracts:

From the New York Evangelist.

"The author states that the book has been prepared to meet a call loud and general in the Churches of Christ, for a fuller and freer participation in public worship by the congregation. To this end it seems to be well designed. The feeling which is evidently gaining ground in New England, as well as in some quarters of our own Church, in favor of a form more liturgical than has hitherto prevailed, ought to be satisfied with the provision that is here made for it."

"THE MORAL SYSTEM."

THE following is the opinion of Rev. CYRUS D. Foss, D.D., pastor of the St. James M. E.

Church, New York, regarding Dr. GILLETT'S work, The Moral System:

NEW YORK, JUNE 22d, 1875. Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co.

Dear Sirs: I am delighted with Prof. GILLETT's treatise on The Moral System. It triumphantly vindicates its title. It is rich in learning, powerful in argument, marvelously condensed, and yet full in statement, perspicuous and terse in style. The wonder is that a work so masterly on a theme so vast could be packed into 134 pages duodecimo. It cannot fail to be intellectually inspiring and morally ennobling for any young man to master this great little book.

I am, very truly yours,

CYRUS D. FOSS.

SCRIBNER FOR JULY.

"KEARNY at Seven Pines," a ballad by Stedman, illustrated by Darley, takes the lead in the July number of SCRIBNER. Next we have a profusely illustrated sketch of "The City of the Golden Gate," by Samuel Williams, one of the best known editors of San Frantion, as well as enthusiasm. cisco, who writes apparently with discreNot the least

interesting part of Mr. Williams' paper is that in which he describes John Chinaman-but his article is lively and readable from beginning to end. Col. Waring's "Farmer's Vacation is this month descriptive of "The Bight of La Manche;" he gives us a very bright and racy article, with a great many illustrations. Dr. Holland's "Story of Sevenoaks" is continued ; Frank R. Stockton writes about "The Girl at Rudder Grange ;" Mr. A. B. Johnson, private secretary of Charles Sumner, presents some more "Recollections" of the Senator; J. B. Drury has an essay on Darwinism; Francis Gerry Fairfield prints an Appendix to his paper on Spiritualism; and among the other contributions we note a story, "A Good for Nothing,' by Prof. Boyesen, author of "Gunnar" and "The Norseman's Pilgrimage;" something about "The Middle-aged Woman," by Mrs. Davis; and a poem by Miss Houston, a daughter of the celebrated Sam. Houston.

In Topics of the Time Dr. Holland writes about "Old and New,' now consolidated with SCRIBNER; "International Copyright;" "The Parochial Schools ;" and an "American school of Art." The Old Cabinet contains "A Confusion of Terms;" "Thought in Art;" "The Plea of Humility;" and "The Pickpocket's Excuse." Home and Society, Culture and Progress, the World's Work, and Bric-a-Brac have their usual variety. The publishers promise that there will be no falling off of interest in the summer months.

in the very highest rank among those with which
modern Germany has enriched the literature of
Europe."-Quarterly Review.

"We look upon Heeren as having breathed a new
life into the dry bones of Ancient History. In coun-
tries, the history of which has been too imperfectly
known to afford lessons of political wisdom, he has
taught us still more interesting lessons-on the social
relations of men and the intercourse of nations in
the earlier ages of the world. His work is as learned
as a professed commentary on the ancient historians
and geographers, and as entertaining as a modern
book of travels."-Edinburgh Review.

"In the midst of this scandalous degradation of Christian eloquence, a man of infinite wit, Father Joseph Isla, undertook to correct the clergy, and more particularly the Preachers, by a Comic Romance. He took Cervantes for his model, in the hope of producing the same impression on bad preachers by the life of his ridiculous monk, as the author of Don Quixote had made on all bad romance writers by the adventures of his whimsical Knight. This extraordinary work, entitled The History of the Famous Preacher, Friar Gerund de Campazas,' is regarded with reason as the first work of Genius which Spain produced in the eighteenth century."-Sismondi.
