SINDING (PROF. PAUL C.) HISTORY OF SCAN $3.00 DINAVIA, from the EARLY TIMES of the NORTHMEN, the SEAKINGS AND VIKINGS, to the PRESENT DAY. 8vo, cloth. Portrail. London, 1866.. SMILES (SAMUEL.) LIVES OF THE ENGINEERS, with an ACCOUNT OF THEIR PRINCIPAL WORKS, including a History of Inland Communication in Britain, and the Invention and Introduction of the Steam Engine and Railway Locomotive. A New and Revised Edition. 5 vols., crown 8vo, with 9 steel Portraits and 342 Illustrations on Wood. London, 1874..... 12 50 CONTENTS. "A chapter of English history which had to be written, and which, probably, no one could have written so well, Mr. Smiles has obtained a mass of original materials. It is not too much to say that we now have an Engineers' Pantheon, with a connected narrative of their successive reclamations from sea, bog, and fen; a history of the growth of the inland communication of Great Britain, by means of its roads, bridges, canals, and railways; and a survey of the lighthouses, breakwaters, docks, and harbors, constructed for the protection and accommodation of our commerce with the world."--Times. "We cannot but refer, in passing to the captivating and instructive volumes which Mr. Smiles has devoted to the Lives of the Engineers,' a record not before attempted of the achievements of a race of men who have conferred the highest honor and the most extensive benefits on their country. Who are the great men of the present age?' said Mr. Bright, in the House of Commons: 'Not your warriors-not your statesmen ; they are your Engineers.'"-Edinburgh Review. "Mr. Smiles has profoundly studied, and has hap pily delineated, in his lucid and instructive biographies, that remarkable succession of gifted minds, which has, not by lucky guesses, but by incessant labor and by life-long thought, gradually erected that noble example of dominion of man over the earth--the science of Engineering; and we are proud to know that there are men yet among us who can wield the arms of the invincible knights of old, and who will leave no meaner memory behind thom."-Quarterly Review. This carefully edited series of ELIZABETHAN JEST-BOOKS is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the wit and i amor of the time when Shakespeare flourished, and as a curious example of the books popular in the sixteenth century. To the English philologist and antiquary, they are likewise extremely interesting. They are very has somely printed, and bound in the Roxburghe style, and are altogether among the daintiest volumes of the modern press." "However ardent in his search, or prodigal of his money, the book collector would find it next to impossible to procure all the originals assembled together in these facetious volumes." X. "The facilitation of access, in a convenient form, to the materials and foundation-stories, which SHAKES PEARE employed, in a greater or less degree, in the composition of his plays, cannot fail to be of utility and value, and the idea of such a literary undertaking occurred to Mr. COLLIER thirty years ago, and was embodied by him in the publication so well known as SHAKESPEARE'S LIBRARY.' “SHAKESPEARE'S LIBRARY' was, unfortunately, imperfect in its range and not accurate in its texts. As regards its incompleteness, it may be suggested that, in Mr. COLLIER's view, some of the matter which constitutes part of the present series was within reach of scholars in other shapes; and so far as the texts are concerned, it is due to Mr. COLLIER to say, that he left the correction of the proofs to his publisher, who discharged the trust unmercifully ill. The collation of the old copies has proved a laborious, but a productive, operation. "But, once for all, it is proper to guard the reader against the idea that 'SHAKESPEARE'S LIBRARY' at all supersedes such publications as the 'ILLUSTRATIONS' of DOUCE, and the NEW ILLUSTRATIONS' of HUNTER. It is a companion to those two admirable works, and should be consulted and read with them; for, in fact, it would be simply impracticable, if it were not also beside the object, to assemble together in the following sheets all the detached scraps and passages from books, which shed an incidental light on places in the plays; that is, of course, the province of the Editors. "SHAKESPEARE'S LIBRARY,' as now re-published and re-edited on an enlarged scale, will, it is trusted, be found to comprise all that is known, or that there is any reasonable probability of recovering, on the subject with which the volumes deal."-Preface.
