erection of the yet unfinished new Opera House, Paris. All the great buildings of the world come under survey and are critically examined. The chapter on Architecture in North America though brief is important as the first one of that country ever introduced in a general work on the art. Mr. Fergusson's severity as a critic is well known, and many of his remarks are not of flattering nature. He gives, however, a very interesting detailed account in the illustrations of the capitol at Washington, comparing it with the New House of Parliament, disadvantageous to the latter. He says, taking it all in all, there are few buildings erected in modern times which possess to a greater extent than the Capitol at Washington, appropriateness of purpose, combined with the dignity necessary for the Senate House of a great nation. Mr. Fergusson regrets that the want of enterprise in American architects should have prevented them from making public their works, and that the materials are consequently so few and meagre.

If American travelers in the Old World only knew how much that is worth seeing there is connected with architectural art, and how infinitely their perceptions would be enlarged and their gratification increased by a slight acquaintance with its history and principles at the command literally of every one who can use his eyes, the subject as a branch of elegant culture would be generally studied, and not passed over as a matter concerning only its professors.

If the importance of architecture in its historical relations needed vindicating, a justification of its highest claims would be found in a new and remarkable work, The Archaeology of Rome, by John Henry Parker, of Oxford. Volume 1st: I. The Primitive Fortifications. II. The Walls and Gates of Rome. III. The Historical Construction of Walls, with a volume of plates comprising nearly 200 beautiful photo-engravings of ancient remains. 2 Vols. 8vo. Mr. Parker is well known as an industrious antiquary who has done much to popularize the study of Gothic and Ecclesiastical architecture in England and America by his well-known Introduction, Glossary, &c. While making a prolonged visit to Rome for his health he was surprised at noticing-in the excavations and explorations now going on and underlying the works of classical times, the remains of massive primitive structures, earth-works, &c., familiar to him in Northern Europe as Celtic, or some term of similar meaning. Detailed examinations followed and left him to identify positively by existing remains that were invisible in classical times, the original structures of the Hill Fort, or primitive city, on the Palatine Mount only, and the gradual increase until it included the whole of the Seven Hills. The remarkable thing about these discoveries is that they agree perfectly with old accounts of the His

tory of the Kings of Rome; that the works of
Servius Tullius, Ancus Martius, Tarquinius
Superbus, etc., are there to this time, (though
daily being effaced by modern improvements
and speculation in building cities,) to testify
that these remains are not mere shadows, as
the school of Niebuhr would pronounce, but
real tangible people, who planned and executed
great works for the protection of the state,
that have withstood the destroying influence
of time, and speak for themselves to the intel-

ployed eight years on his work, every page
containing some new matter of interest for the

classical student and scholar. It is sold at a
price insufficient to defray the cost of the illus-
trations alone.

Another great work has just seen its completion by the issue of the last or supplementary volume to the division of Arts and Sciences of the English Cyclopædia, conducted by Charles Knight, and now furnished in twenty-six volumes 4to. The history and sale of Encyclopædias is a curious and interesting branch of literary inquiry from the first printed one in England, The Myrror of the Worlde, translated and brought out by Caxton in 1480, to the present work. Its source is well known to be the famous Penny Cyclopædia, the only The Engreal original work of the kind. "contains about fifteen per lish Cyclopædia cent. more matter than the Penny, and is thoroughly revised as far as possible in conformity with the present state of knowledge. The original cost of the literary work and revision has been about sixty thousand pounds, and the best men in every department have been collaborateurs in the undertaking. For instance, in the supplementary volume just issued, the articles on Assyrian and Babylonian Literature, Language, etc., and Hamath and Cypriote Inscriptions and other Oriental archæological matters, are by George Smith of the British Museum; "Egyptain Antiquities, "The Moabite Stone," etc., are by Samuel Birch; "Japanese Language and Literature" is by Prof. Summer, of King's College, "TranLondon; Nebula," "Astronomy," sits of Venus," etc., by Prof. Robert Grant, of the University of Glasgow; and so on through a series of well known and authoritative names. In the words of Prof. DeMorgan and Nichol, "The English Cyclopædia, the cheapest and least pretending, is really the most philosophical of our scientific dictionaries. It is one made up of a series of treatises, some good and many indifferent, but is a thorough dictionary, well proportioned, and generally written by the best men of the time. The Britannica is a splendid body of treatises, with help from the accompanying dictionaries, but not of the most complete character." These two works, The English Cyclopædia and The Encyclopædia Brittannica, are the only live books of the kind now produced in Great Britain, and the respective difference in their structure is truly thus discriminated.

Standard Theological & Philosophical Works.

HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION. By GEO. P. FISHER, D. D.,

Professor of Ecclesiastical History in Yale College, author of The Supernatural Origin of Christianity, &c. One vol. 8vo, cloth.... .$3.00.

CRITICAL NOTICES.

"The History is superior to any other which has been written on this deeply interesting subject. There are others more voluminous, but none which presents the subject in such clearness and accuracy of statement, breadth of philosophical view, and such just proportionment of events and characters. We doubt if anywhere else can be found a more concise and yet entire presentation of those principles and facts which lay far back of the Reformation, and which led straight to it."-Watchman and Reflector, Boston.

"Dr. Fisher, it is needless to say, bas peformed his task with conscientious fidelity, with earnest sympathy, and ample acquaintance with the original sources. He has endeavored in his narrative-which is always clear, flowing and vivacious, and not unfrequently eloquent-to interweave with the religious and theological aspects of the subject, the political and secular events which had so powerful an influence upon the general development." -New York Evening Post.

"The book is a remarkable instance of that power of lucid condensation which its author possesses in a high degree. It will be most enjoyed by one who brings to its reading some general knowledge of history. But we judge that any intelligent mind, with a historical taste, will find it full of interest and stimulation. Its quality of condensedness renders it worthy to be studied, not merely read; and it would be excellent as a text-book in college. The references are full and valuable; and the chronological table and list of authorities will be appreciated by all students.-New York Christian Union.

"Professor Fisher has done his work with the skill and power of a master. He evidently has a rare genius for historical labor.-Chicago Evening Journal.

"It forms a monument of American Scholarship which should be honored as one of the choice intellectual treasures of the country.-N. Y. Tribune.

"The whole work is one of high authority on philosophical topics, and has been made of great value to students by full notes on various parts of the original work added by the translators."-Presbyterian, Phila.

"The criticisms are remarkably candid and impartial ..... The work as it now stands, with the last revision of the lamented author, and the valuable additions of President Porter and Prof. Botta, is the most complete compendium of philosophical literature which has yet been given."- Watchman & Reflector, Bost n.

"Taking the whole together, it furnishes the most complete and reliable apparatus for the study of philosophy which has ever been placed in the hands of American students."-Evangelist, New York.

"The further we travel with Dr. Hopkins the more reason we find for admiring the manner in which he has treated a difficult and abstruse subject. He has put it before us clearly and systematically, with the evident intention of making himself understood; and he has succeeded. We have rarely met with a metaphysical work that is so meritorious for its perspicacity."-New York Times. Dr. Hopkins' wonderful power of analysis and his clearness of thought have never been displayed to better advantage than in the present work. We know of no book which deals so intelligibly with problems so deep and difficult."-Boston Journal.

"Its clearness, method and statement is the best evidence of Dr. Hopkins' great power. None but a master could treat such an abstract subject in a way which every common reader can understand, and even find a fascination in.-Watchman & Reflector, Boston.
