the beginning of this year in accordance with the terms under which the Prince Consort Prize is awarded. In preparing the second edition I have made few changes of importance.

The subject was originally chosen by myself and approved by the Adjudicators. The purpose I have kept in view is to describe the state of politics and political parties in Athens, without discussing the separate and successive events of political history. Certain questions, which do not directly bear on the history of politics, are treated at some length, either on account of the intrinsic interest of those questions or on account of the obscurity in which they are involved.
