* The Books distinguished by a star are those published under the direction
of the Committee of General Literature and Education appointed by the Society
for Promoting Christian Knowledge.

Elementary Books, published under the Sanction of the Committee of Council on Education.

Reading.

The First Phonic Reading Book; with Notes, explanatory of the Method, and Instructions for Teaching. 8d.

The Second Phonic Reading Book. 1s.

The method of teaching reading, spelling, and the meaning and pronunciation of words, by classifying the various sounds of letters, as exemplified in these two elementary reading-books, is so rational and explicit that its

effectiveness in practice cannot be doubted. The cuts of objects whose names illustrate the distinctive sounds assist in fixing the children's attention; and the examples impress the sense as well as the sound on the memory.-Spectator.

Fifty Wall Tablets, containing the Exercises. 78.

The Reading Frame, with the Letters and Pictures. 30s.

Writing.

A Manual of Writing, on the Method of Mulhauser, adapted to English use. With Forty Model Plates. 2s. 6d.

Writing Models, the First or Elementary Set; Forty Plates, mounted on Card-Board for the Use of Pupils. 2s. 6d.

Writing Models, the Second Set; the Medium, or Half Text Hand, and the Ciphers. 18.

Writing Models, the Third Set; the Fine, or Small Hand, and for Punctuation. Proverbs and Moral Sentences. 1s.

Writing Models, the Fourth Set; the Fine, or Small Hand, and the Ciphers. List of the Sovereigns of England from the Conquest. 1s.

Mulhauser's method is not to be considered as applicable only to the instruction of large masses of scholars. It will be found equally advantageous in private instruction, and to this end we find directions given in the Manual; indeed, with no other apparatus than the Manual, and a few writ

ing books properly ruled, the parent or teacher may conduct his children through the whole of the elementary course of instruction, for the Writing Models and Tablets of rules are bound up with the Manual, thus rendering it complete in itself.-Saturday Magazine.

Arithmetic.

Exercises in Arithmetic, for Elementary Schools, after the Method

of Pestalozzi. 1s. 6d.

A rudimentary course of practical arithmetic, on the principle of mental calculation; by which pupils acquire from the first an insight into the properties of numbers and a habit of ready reckoning that would shame many an adult. The nature of fractions is explained with great clearness, by linear divisions of squares on a board; and the exercises are of a kind to test the understanding and quicken

the perception of the learners. The old method of setting sums and leaving the child to puzzle them out by himself, is an absurd waste of time. By the Pestalozzian method, a score or two of sums are worked extempore, without slate or book; the attention being kept awake and the mind actively employed throughout the lesson.-Spectator.

The Tables of Squares, Unity, and Simple and Compound Fractions, required in Teaching the Method, on Four large Double Sheets, mounted on canvas and rollers, and varnished. 21s.

Tables of Unity, and Simple and Compound Fractions; the Small Set, on Three Sheets. 9d.

Materials for Writing and Arithmetic Classes.

Writing Books, ruled for the Method; 28. per dozen; 16s. per hundred. No. I., ruled with cross and diagonal lines throughout; No. II., the same ruling, alternated with leaves of cross-lines only No. III., for Half Text.

Slates, ruled for the Method, per dozen. 6s.

Large Black Boards, with Cross and Diagonal Lines for Writing, Stave Lines for Music, and Spaces for Arithmetic. 30s.

Easels, for the Black Boards. 12s.

Drawing.

A Manual of Model-Drawing from Solid Forms; with a Popular View of Perspective, adapted to the Instruction of Classes in Schools and Public Institutions. By Butler Williams, C.E., F.G.S. Octavo, with Shaded Engravings of the Models, and numerous Wood-Cuts. 158.

This work is designed for the guidance of teachers of drawing according to the method of M. Dupuis, adopted in the drawing classes at Exeter Hall; and viewed with reference to this purpose, it is very ably done: the clearness with which every point is elucidated by definitions and diagrams is admirable; and a good deal of information, useful to be known on the subject, is given in addition to

the necessary directions for conducting classes. The optical phænomena which to govern the apparent forms of objects are carefully and distinctly explained: the exercises exemplifying the changes that take place in the length and direction of lines by shifting the point of view, being the most complete and valuable portion of the volume.-Spector.

It is likewise taught in St. Mark's College, Chelsea, the Whiteland's Training School, and the Central Schools of the National Society, in the Training Schools of the British and Foreign School Society, in

the Home and Colonial Infant School Society's Model Schools, in the Chester Diocesan Training School, in the Model and Normal Schools of the Irish Commissioners in Dublin, in the Harmony Schools, and those of the Royal Hospital Schools, Greenwich, and in the majority of wellconducted elementary schools both in town and country."Minutes of Committee of Council on Education.
