"Mr. Southey writes like a man whose habitual devoutness of temper associates all scenes with spiritual thoughts, discerns the moral uses of whatever occurs, and interprets all by a reference to some providential order. His poetry, accordingly, is not simply innocent and pure, but directly and persuasively religious. The tendency, the very moral of each of his greater works, is expressly favourable to faith and piety, and rarely are the highest virtues more affectingly taught. None of the elegant republications of the day have given us greater pleasure than this. We are confident that Southey has not yet received the measure of reputation which is his due. This complete collection will find a hearty welcome, and will increase the number of his readers."

NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, April 1839.

"The late lamented Richard Watson said, 'Mr. Southey is a poet and a good one;' and every competent judge will concur in the same opinion. Southey's diction, both in prose and verse, is purely English; and there is a raciness in his style which places him at the head of all the literary men of his age." METHODIST MAGAZINE.

"The critic has little to do but to point out the existence of these works, the beauty of the type and embellishments, and the cheapness of the cost; the public has long ago acknowledged their merit and established their reputation. The author of the Life of Nelson' must live as long as our history and language endure: there is no man to whom the latter owes a greater obligation; no man who has done more for literature, by his genius, his labour, and his life."
