STANFORD'S NEW PHYSICAL SERIES OF
OF WALL MAPS-

continued.

In addition to these special features, the Maps supply all the usual information to be found on School Maps, such as the political divisions, the chief cities, &c. &c. In the British Isles a small inset Map has been introduced, showing the rainfall, and the advance of the tidal wave round our coast; and in the Maps of England, Scotland, and Ireland, the average annual rainfall is given at all the principal towns &c.

The following Maps, forming the first part of the Physical Series of Wall Maps for use in Schools and Colleges, are ready for sale.

They are uniform in scale and size with the Political Series already in use, and which have acquired so great a popularity; and will be found as accurate and as useful in teaching Physical Geography as the companion series are and have been in Political Geography.

Orographische Karte and other such titles need no longer be presented to the eyes of the young student ignorant of German. He can now read names in a familiar orthography on wall maps carefully edited and admirably executed. In the map of the British Isles before us the geological structure of our country is indicated by the help of various colours, and the adjacent seas have the soundings further shown by hypsometric lines well defined. The editor, Dr. Ramsay, Director-General of H.M. Geological Survey, has here put before us at a glance "millions of facts," the acquisition of which from books would be almost a life labour.....We cannot too strongly recommend this map to the notice of all who conduct science classes, and teachers generally could scarcely find a more suggestive or more useful ornament for the walls of the room in which geography is taught on rational methods.'-SCHOOLMASTER.

"We are glad to find that extreme accuracy has been attained even in those parts where the Ordnance authorities have hardly done anything. We have examined at least a dozen localities where errors were probable, and have only found one case which could be improved if the draughtsman went to the spot. The colours are well chosen, and the general effect is very good, as is also the execution of the work.'SYMONS' MONTHLY METEOROLOGICAL MAGAZINE.

'It is a very handsome map, and, independently of its great usefulness, it is a work that cannot fail to be of very great interest to every intelligent person.....These Orographical Maps are a valuable novelty in geographical publications.'-SCHOOL BOARD CHRONICLE.

The public in general, and educationists in particular, ought to be grateful to Mr. Stanford for thus putting within their reach a style of map which has hitherto been peculiar to Germany. The maps are really admirable specimens of a very difficult kind of cartography....nearly all that could be desired.'NATURE.

This book has for its aim a more or less minute analysis of the principal Idioms current in the best Latin authors.

A series of Idiomatic Rules and Examples on opposite pages, classified each under appropriate head, may tend in some measure to the doing away with that most common reproach, The words are Latin, but the idioms are English.'

For every Latinism a variety of equivalent Anglicisms is given, and thereby the student can gage the value of this or that Latin idiom.

EXTRACT FROM THE PREFACE.-' This Synopsis of the Four Books of Livy (xxi-xxiv) is intended to be an assistant to the student in his work, and not a substitute for it; and on this account it has been thought advisable rather to point out those passages which require more careful attention on the part of the student, than to translate them for him.'

FROM THE PREFACE.-'Two main objects have been kept in view throughout: first, to condense into as readable a form as possible the mass of detail contained in the first six books of the "Annals"; secondly, by dint of copious quotations from the text to render the reader familiar with the standpoint and the more important comments of the historian.'
