to break the door; but the men put forth their hands, and pulled Lot into the house and thuc the door; and they finore the men with blindness, both small and great, so that ihey wearied themselves to find the door."
We will now see the end of your new philosophy: as soon as Lot and his daughters was safe ; then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire; and he overthrew those cities, and that that grew upon the ground, as a pledge to posterity. Your original monument bears testimony at this day to the wickedness of your society; the ground on which this unnatural and filthy, which you term enlightened philosophy, was perpetraied, is a Jake or puddle of stench ; it is unfathomable to dive to the bottom, how far the creature, throwing off his duty to his creator, and the respect he owes his own fuperior nature, is capable ; of these even the above is a ftanding monitor; therefore I advise you take warning, reverend doctor, and in future inculcate both to yourself and others, your double duty ; pray who is the happy, the good man, or moniter? a man that will not acknowledge his God, is not worthy to be permitted among beasts.
Luther. Nincompoop, you degrade the philosopher's stone, that turns all things into gold; don't you observe the golden rule which has raised the fabric of our philosophy, which has given the glorious title to this our age, “The enlightened age, o brilliant, О jewel of inestimable value, when shall I be in full and quiet possession, and me and no other, drowned in
your charms? The great and fupreme Father, Dictator and Legislator, of our enlightened age, the most supernal, glorious, herculean and heroic Voltaire, after settling his kingdom of light, and swelling every space, during the course of fourscore years with new acts of heroism, far outstripping all of the celestial community, on the eve of his departure outslept himself. A legacy he thoughi fic in his great wisdom to leave his sons and daughters for their guide, and an example to all future ages, that contemplating this supreme act, that sealed the life of that prodigy, they may in the fullness of will sit down with that great man and partake of the most delicious, savoury, rich, strong banquet, filling the conception with the odour of lovereign delight. O great champion of light, who knowing no other but yourself, was worthy of yourself, fed upon yourself; this great act publishes to the world Voltaire lived and died Voltaire : for, dear brethren, when the hour: approached that he should lose his wind, while one arm grappled with the parting breath, the other's' extasy of delight was busy in the closeftool pan, feasting himself as heartily and with that keen appetite he at times enjoyed. He knew the world was not worthy to possess the least particle of his exquisite excellency. So be it. I have laid before ye an example of greatness; go and do so, and leave me to enjoy a nap.
In Moles's apartments, Mofes, Boy, and the two
Notaries. - Mofes. Welcome, my young friend, this meeting is truly cordial, as we shall now consider some parts in our last that have impresed my mind, I mean the different passages of scripture relating to the divinity of the Messiah.
Boy. The divinity of the Mefjah is declared throughout the scriptures, beginning wich the first of Genesis and finishing with the end of your prophets.
Moses. I confess the mystery staggers and greatly oppresses my fpirits ; my whole life has been anxiously desirous of knowledge and searching out truth; but never found myself plunged in the maze of difficulties and laby. rinths of impenetrable depths, which are un

Moses. The old covenant inculcated one God, but no distinction of persons. Your's agree with us in the unity of substance, that is, one God, in three persons : here lies the stone of contention, the rock of offence. .
Boy. This is the rock of offence spoken of by the Royal Prophet, whoin Israel reveres and honours, in his 118th Pfalm. The stone which
the the builders refused is become the chief corner ftone. This is the Lord's doing; and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; God is the Lord who has Thewn us light.
Mofes. David is, and ever was, revered and honoured by Israel, as the darling of his God, and father of their Messiah. And the Almighty pronounced these blessings; but the law was given to Mofes, for the rule and guide of Israel; therefore, unless I am convicted by the five books, wrote by our legislator, of error, I am bound to remain a member of the original covenant, known to be by the express command of the Almighty, and positively enjoined. Boy. As your desire in this meeting is to search out the will of the Almighty God, and his divine Truths, it will be proper to divert yourself of all prejudice and partiality, and with an heroic resolution to embrace what your reason assents to without contradiction; but in this great matter your whole confidence must be immoveably fixed on your God. In the last conference there were some texts quoted which were not discussed in Genesis, which we will, if you please, examine. Genesis ift chapter. In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth: and the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep : and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. I beg your explanation, who is this Spirit of God, marked out distinct and clear?
Moles. God is a Spirit and cannot sufferparts. * Boy. God created, and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. It is most positive and absolute, by this scripture, that God, and the Spirit, are distinct persons; but God, producing the Spirit, is one Tubstance, consequently one God. 'Moses. As I observed in our last, there is no diving into the depth of the Divinity.
Boy. The Godhead is infinite, and our conceptions weak and limited to a very insignificancy; yet, when his Majesty is pleased to communicate his secrets and reveal his truchs, it is the duty of his creature to embrace them, and submit with joy and perfect obedience; the reverse proceeds from what Almighty God repeatedly charged Israel with, an obdurate and Ainty heart.
Mofes. I confess, to the confusion of Israel, what you advance; but these repeated admonitions were, when Israel fell from their allegiance and went aside from the law and commandments. ,
Boy. The law was binding and obligatory, until the Messiah.
Mofes. Mofes, whom God Almighty appointed our law-giver, gave Ifrael charge to obey the Messiah. And the Lord your God shall raise you up a prophet from the inidst of those of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him shall you hearken, according to all thou defiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb, in the day of the assembly, saying, “ let me not hear
