phecy should be until the coming of the Merliah, when we shall see all things clearly; but the period marked out is past near two thousand years. During that time Israel has had no communication with her God, having neither prophet, temple, or sacrifice, and not even a resting place, which they can say, this is mine. Omiserable, forsaken and lost nation, no longer a people, but the dregs and excrescence of the hunan race, not pitied, but despised; hated, and funned, as an adder whose sting is deadly, abandoned by her Creator, and hated as condemned wretches by her own species, suspected capable of every treason, faithless, and not having the common seeds of honesty. Israel, from the beginning never was without her God, her prophets, even in her captivity. She had her princes, her temple, her sacrifices, and was always a nation ; but when she expected more transcending glory and to be at the summit of her wishes, under the wing of her Melfiah, the most dear spouse and darling of her foul, she finds herself at that very epoch and period of tiine cast down in the horror of unparalelled woe. Her temple, cities, towns and all that appertained to her, totally destroyed, her country parcelled out to strangers, and themselves destroyed ; so that the woods could not supply crosses to gibber the number of wretches that was put to death. What offends human nature still more, three parties of themselves in the city of Jerusalem seemed resolved to favour the destruction of Israel ; every man's {word was against his neighbour, destroying all L3

within the city, whilst the Roman army hemmed them in on all sides' without, they destroyed each other within, whilft the Roman army destroyed whoever was found without; so that difficulties within and without starved them into the unnatural catastrophe of feeding on each other, the most delicate ladies eating their infants. After this unequalled and unparalelled scene, ensues another equally base. Ninety thousand were sold naves into Egypt and elsewhere ; Naves, according to historians of that age, thirty for a piece of filver. The prophet Jeremiah mentions one fold for thirty pieces of silver, and the price was laid out in the purchase of the potter's field; but here we find thirty bought for one piece of filver. Here would come in the lamentation of the same prophet very seasonably. O Israel, miseries are not to be recounted, being numberless. O my people.”

Boy. Know, therefore, and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Melfiah, the prince shall be seven weeks; and three score and two weeks the street shall be built again, and the wall even in troublesome times. And after three score and two weeks shall the Meffiah be cut off, but not for himself; and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Mojes. It was the most bloody and obstinate and most dreadful war in the annals of the world. The number gathered to Jerusalem to solemnize the Great Paffover, or Easter, were compured to amount to three millions, which were all destroyed but about one thirtieth part, that were sold Naves ; so that, as the prophet terms it, we may truely call it a food of blood, and to this period desolation. And that no footsteps might remain to declare its former grandeur and magnificence, Titus, the Roman general, made a total desolation, according to the prophet.

Boy. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week, and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the obla. tion to cease : and for the overspreading of abominations he sha!l make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined, Thall be poured upon the desolate.

Mofes. The prophecy is clear and determined. Israel has brought a curse upon herself, and entailed desolation and infamy on her posterity ; fo that when we expected a blefing, we received a curse, and this at the time the blessing was promised ; for immediately after, Caius, who succeeded Tiberius in the empire, greatly distressed the Jewish nation ; and he changed and transformed the temple of Jerusalem, which had hitherto been the temple of the living God, into a temple dedicated to himself, causing it thenceforward to be called the temple of Caius Junior Jupiter Conspicuous. And at the expiration of forty years, after the expectation of the Messiah, when Jerusalem and all Judea was laid waste and destroyed by the Romans, Israel has ceased to be a nation, but as fugitives and vagabonds are fhifted and scats tered, 'despised, and hated over the whole face of the earth, considered by all the tribes of the earth as the common enemy of the human race; and this upon the eve of two thousand years : ànd, at this day, not the least gleam or diftant prospect of reconciliation with her God. All vision and prophecy are sealed up, and Israel devoted as a curse in the mouth of all nations, her country, at this period, over-run with briars and thorns, and in the hands of a most base people: and, on the ground where her temple stood, there is erected a Turkish Mosque.

Boy. And he shall confirm his covenant with many.

Mofes. That Ifrael cannot fathom or understand, as he has not manifested himself,

Boy. The scriptures will be, and must be true.

Moses. Ifrael dare not contradict her God : but she has not obtained the promise.

Boy. And after threescore and two weeks the Messiah shall be cut off, but not for himself.

Moses. This is also incomprehensible, as the Messiah is expressly promised to gather Israel from all countries into their own land, to enjoy every blessings, He being Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and that they will be a blessing to the whole earth.

Boy. Two thousand years experimentally, points out and unfolds your misconftruing and erroneous conceptions of the prophecies. The Promised Blefling, at the fulness of time, ma.

nifested Himself, who you rejected and hung on a tree, treating the Lord of Glory with the vilest ignominy, and has brought down your rancour and inveterate hatred, inculcated, nourished, and lodged from father to son in the heart of every Jew throughout your generations to this day. O the misery and mischievous tendency that await the abuse of freewill, This abuse originated in the angels, whence their malice have lost them their original birthright, and placed them in the prison of eternal woe. Next falls man, beginning in our first parents, which has multiplied in their posterity; but Israel, as she was exalted above her fellows, becomes more criminal in an equal crime: but she has perpetrated and glories in her guilt, Black Infamy. The thought fills my soul with horror, my heart bursts with griefa The Lord of Life nailed and hanging on a tree betwixt two thieves, naked, bleeding, and all covered with wounds, spittle and dirt. In this most ignominious manner he remained a spectacle and gazing-Itock to angels and men, and when He gave up His life, their rage pieced His fide with a lance penetrating His heart.
