Moses. The Almighty gave Israel a law, and by that law Jesus Christ was condemned to die.
Deuteronomy 18th chapter. But the prophet which Mall presume to Speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that ball Speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet fall die.'
Boy. Bint if thou say in thy heart, how shall we know the word which the Lord hath not fpoken ? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not fpoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously, thou shalt not be afraid of him. What we have recited is the latter part of the prophecy, which is the rock of offence to the house of Israel, on which they have split, and plunged themselves in the abyss of destruction, we will begin with the first part and so proceed to this stumbling stone and rock of offence.
The Lord spake unto Mofes in these words: I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put My words into his mouth, and be fall Speak unto them all that I ball command bim. And it mall come to pafs, that whosoever will not bearken unto my words, which he mall Speak in My name, I will require it of him. This prophecy, agreed by all, relates to the Messiah, who was to be a lecond legisator, or law-giver, to confirm and establish a new covenant.
Mofes. What you advance is just ; for if the first remained, why a second ?
Boy. The time of his coming is agreed to be . according to the scripture, when Jesus Christ. appeared.
Mofes. Universal agreement of the whole world, both Jews and Genciles.
Boy. He was prophecied to be of the stock of David. and consequently of the tribe of Judah.
Moses. The scriptures declare it.
Boy. You grant these privileges to Jesus Christ.
Mofes. Israel never disputed these privileges, they were proved by the universal tax of Au. gustus, when every person was obliged to repair to the place of their nativity to answer personally, when his parents repaired to the city (as stock) of David; for the tribes of Israel kept, from the beginning, each tribe and each family a regular register, to preserve privileges and inconfusion.
Boy. We have, in the reign of the emperor Vespasian, an Inquiry for the for the kindred of David, after the taking of Jerusalem; also by the emperor Domitian, when the nephews of Jude, apostle, was brought before him, who were near relations of Jesus Christ, and being examined by the emperor, declared themselves descendants of David, and that the kingdom of Christ was celestial and not terrestrial : for the emperors were, as Herod, afraid of the power of Christ, taking the prophecies in the terrestrial fense, as Israel has ever done.
Moses. Israel ever has, and at this day expect their Melliah to appear, the high and mighty
Lord of the earth, and will restore them to their promised country and privileges.
Boy. Israel, you grant, acknowledges Jesus Christ to be the seed of David, and that he appeared at the time appointed..
Moses. Agreed thus far; but Ifrael never will accept Jesus, whom you call Christ, for che Messiah, his character and person being the reverse to the person and character of their Messiah, who will manifest himself the glory and astonishment of all nations : from all parts will the nations bring gifts to Jerusalem; our temple and worship reitored, where peace and harmony will dwell, every man enjoying himself under his Vine and Fig-tree, with every blessing, without fear of war, and 'Israėl be a glory throughout the earth. Kings and princes will honour them, and every one will think himself happy if he is permitted to take hold of the skirt of a Jew. This is the expectation of Israel, not as your Christ, who sprung, from obscurity, without being known who he was; he was raised arnong the dregs of the vulgar and reprobate, who he herded with, breaking and encouraging his associates to be guilty of the breach of laws and every crime with impunity. Twelve of the most hardy ruffians he took into his most familiar friendship, and in culcated and taught them magic; for he exceeded all that ever went before him, or since, in the black art. Peter waa his chief, to whom he communicated his secrets; the others drenched deep in this deadly poison. Seventy others were made drunk, and to this day many are in
toxicated in the Roman church, who copy after this mighty Lord.
Boy. Mefiah shall be cut off, but not for hiinself, and he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week, and he shall cause the sacrifice to cease, and the city and temple to be dettroyed, and to the end desolacions are determined.
Moses. Here I am lost in horror and despair. Melliah cut off, his covenant confirmed, Israel with her temple and sacrifice cast off, Jerusalem destroyed, and Judea laid waste and given to the Gentiles, themselves made Naves. Othe che misery of two thousand years.
Boy. Isaiah gth chaprer. For unto us a child is born, unto us a fon is given, and the government
all be upon his houlders, and bis name shall be called, Wonderful Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, and upon the throne of David and bis kingdom to order and establish it with judgment and with justice, from benceforth even for ever; the zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this.
Moses. Ifrael grants her Messiah no part of , the Divinity, but every perfection of human nature, and great share of the Spirit, far exceeding, if possible, Moses, whom the Almighty spoke with face to face. Assuming to himself this infinite dignity was the condemna. tion and death of Jesus Chrift; for many accusations proved ineffectual and abortive unto our high and chief priest. Caiphas asked him, (as he had declared himlelt) Art thou C
it thou Chrift
the son of the Blessed ? Without hesitating, he answered, “ I am; and you shall see the lon of man sitting on the right-hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” Then the highpriest renc his clothes and faith, “ What need we further witness, you have heard the blasphemy; what think you ?” and they all condemned him to be guilty of death. Then they spit upon him, covered his face, buffeted him, and said deridingly; « Prophesy,” and the servants struck him; and to confirm to you more fully that Jesus, taking on himself the dignity of the Divinity, was his condemnation and death. The words of our high-priest to Pilate iş sufficient with the body of the people, when the governor would have set him free. These are their words: “ We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Boy. If this have ever been the sentiments of the Jews, it explains very clearly the cause which influenced them to put the prophes to death, for almost the whole have spoken of the divinity of Chrift; and you well know that they were unpleasing companions to Israel, for they put them to death.
Mofes. Israel has been complained of as a ftiff-necked and stony hearted race, through. out her scriptures; but where is the nation without this obduracy: Ifrael has her foibles, but she also has her virtues. What other peo ple have attended as Israel upon her God, from the time of our father Abraham, the term four thousand years, to this day; suffering from
